I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
I can't help but notice that a lot of the folks around here who own and love Jags and Jazzmasters also own Teles... I own two teles myself, as some of you know.
On the other hand, I also notice there are not many who speak highly of Strats ($trats ). I own a $trat, too and I love it.
It seems to me, with the tastes in music that a good percentage of the members have, that the Tele wouldn't be a likely choice... I would think Les Pauls, SG's, PRS...etc.
God bless 'em for loving Teles, but it just makes me curious...

Teles can do it all. I've had Strats for almost 30 years and while they're comfortable as hell, I've never been in love with the Strat bridge pickup and I spend 99% of my time there.

I think you have looked at the data (not much talking about strats) and come to an incorrect conclusion. We don't talk about strats here because this is an offset forum. Plus there are a zillion other places on the web to discuss strats.RumorsOFsurF wrote: On the other hand, I also notice there are not many who speak highly of Strats ($trats ).
Hey I have 8 offsets (jags, Jm, bass vi, jazz basses) but I also have 7 strats and 1 tele. But I discuss offsets here....
I don't think you can conclude too much "about offset people" and what they like/use from the conversations here.

Sook, I think there is some truth in what he says. This IS an offset forum, but in the Non Offset Guitar section there are maybe two threads about strats and a lot about telecasters.

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
Ok.. a few more points for my side of the discussion
1. in my experience the following laws of the universe exist to a lesser or greater degree:
those who love strats, only strats, all things strats, always strats, any start thing , generally have no knowledge of anything but strats and inparticular no knowledge of offsets.
[in the above rule "strat" can be replaced with "tele"]
The corollaryto this rule is : those who like offsets usually appreciate other guitars, no matter how varied, strange or just simple they are , including strats.
2. Some of us, especially those who do like strats as well as offsets, realise that there is a "hatred of strats" by some offset guitar lovers. So rather than annoy them any further we do not bring up strat discussions in what essentially is an offset forum. For example just yesterday I had an issue with the mounting holes in the bobbins of some strat pickups I am going to use in an offset project guitar I am building. I needed advice, but i did not raise it here as a "non offset guitar thread" because the question is not meant for this place ... strats have zillions of places to discuss things ... what I did was just contact another member of this forum directly whom I respected the advice of, knowing that he also knew about strats, and received the solutiuon to my problem. I didn't need to bother the forum about a strat problem I had.
3. lastly from a statistical point of view, I find it difficult to believe any inference can be made about those who like or dislike a particular type of guitar given that the sample size of the population of this forum is fucking small
How many guitarists are there in the world
how many many like strats
how many like strats and offsets
how many like teles and offsets
how many members do we have in this forum: approx 450
how many have teles and offsets
how many have strats and offsets
numbers are getting very mall to do any statistical analysis.

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
The Tele thing stuck out like a sore thumb to me too. It isn't the kind of thing that would make me draw conclusions about all of the offsetters in the world, but I think it does speak about the offsetters that occupy this particular space (however un/representative we may be of all the offsetters in the world). As you point out though sookwinder, there are a lot of reasons that such a thing might be so. I agree that the number of Tele posts vs Strat posts is not necessarily indicative of Tele/Strat love and I think you've made a great argument.
All that said, I'm not much of a Tele fan. I love the way they look and I generally like the way they sound when other people play them. For reasons I don't really understand, I just can't figure out how to use one. As for Strats, I'm not much of a fan of them either although I do own two. I think they are really hard to make sound good and I have a lot of respect for those that are able to, even if I don't care for their music otherwise. Personally, I love love love the neck + middle position sound, but I really dislike the bridge (imagine that!).
Regardless of how I feel about either of these guitars for my own personal use, I wouldn't think of criticizing somebody else's choice to use one. They are Fenders. Good ones too. Heck, I didn't even have a bad thing to say about the Jem.
All of the hoopla that gets built up around Teles/Strats is kind of like the hoopla about Cobain: hoopla. Hoopla isn't going to keep me from liking anything, nor is it going to make me like anything.
Oh, and yeah, I love Les Pauls.

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
Well I think it's definitely true on this board. And there have even been specific posts about it, if not here then at the old place. A lot of people posted that a tele was their number 2 behind a JM/Jag.
For me, without being technical at all, the JM is the best and most comfortable guitar for most sounds I want to make. For the other sounds I want to make, the tele is. But it's all more or less the same style.

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
I have to say I've noticed a similar slant and I almost commented on it a time or two. I don't know what it is about telecasters. When I first got into guitars, I was a hollowbody guy, I thought teles were ugly with the non-matching pickups, funky bridge, lumpy headstock, no trem and that great, big horn sticking up on the side. But, damn if they didn't grow on me and I had to get one.
One more guitar, then I'll practice!

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
I somewhat agree with what luau said, I do appreciate the sound of the Tele and some genius Tele players are among my favorites, somehow I've just never been able to use it to it's full potential myself. I used to own several of them over the years but they're all gone now. Maybe some day I'll get one again just for certain sounds but it could never be my main guitar. From my own point of view, I think there is no such thing as one guitar that can do it all. (Of course some might disagree with that). The Jazzmaster is my main choice for my own music, the stuff I play with my band as well as for the instrumental rock tunes I play by myself. But I'm also a fan of, for instance, Rory Gallagher, and when I play along with his tunes, the Strat is the obvious choice. Then there are certain things I like to play that sound best on the Gibson. It just depends on the kind of sound I'm looking for at the moment.

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
I didn't know I would hit a nerve so hard with some folks! If I did, I'm sorry... I'm not trying to start trouble. I just happened to notice there were a lot of posts about teles. Also, in this post:
index.php?topic=160.0;topicseen
I noticed there were a lot of Teles in the background of the pics. (others playing them in the band, on a stand, etc.)
I never said "everyone here owns a tele, should own a tele, would be better players if they did, or suck if they don't...
It was just an observation, make of it what you will...
And I do understand that this is an offset forum... but we are all guitarists, first and foremost. One should be able to appreciate all guitars for their contribution to our art, regardless of whether you own one or aspire to own one.
No harm intended

No, no trouble or harm! It's a valid point and an interesting discussion.
I think part of the reason is that offsetters are drawn to the underdog, we dare to be different. I think a Tele fits better in that realm than does a $trat. Likewise, on the Gibby side, I prefer the SG to a Les Paul. Not that SGs and Teles are underdogs, but they just aren't quite as mainstream.
Does this make any sense? I feel like I'm rambling. There's a point here, I just can't express it very well.

I couldn't have said it better myself!! I never thought of them as the underdogs, but it's true!!! Everyone has a $trat or an LP... I prefer Teles and 335's!fullerplast wrote: No, no trouble or harm! It's a valid point and an interesting discussion.

I love this forum!!! I feel so akin to all my fellow offsetters! Nowhere else have I found other guitar freaks who have the same interests as me...Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.
Kind of creepy, I know.

Your among friends here. No flames.vegasrock wrote: Hope I don't get too flamed, but i'm actually a tele and lp junior player.
i'm basically here because i do builds and refinishes for customers that own offsets and I figured i'd learn a bit more about them....but yeah...i love tele's.
One thing that hasn't been discussed is how much our Offset hero's also love teles. J. Mascis, and Lee Ronaldo to name 2...

Re: I've noticed a trend with Jag and JM owners and Teles
I think a lot of Strat-hate is leftover from the FDP, where the Strat people were particularly parochial in their outlook. The guitar is a fine, fine instrument, but its fans, ehhhhhh, not so much.
I've got five Telecasters and a Stratocaster and a Jazzmaster and some Hamers and a Les Paul and some Danos and a Rickenbacker and a couple of oddballs and by ghod I love 'em all!
I'm drawn here not so much by my love of offsets but by the catholic nature of people's musical interests and the deep wisdom and respect of the majority of posters here. Also, you guys know who Bob Quine and Nels Cline and Tom Verlaine are!
