I... had.. to.. do it... '62 black CIJ telecaster

Post by fuzzking » Thu Mar 08, 2007 12:43 am

The day before yesterday I went into the guitar store around the corner,
as they had some of Epiphone Jumbos in vintage SB, I thought I'd  try some out
and not leave the store without one. I drove the guy nuts by requesting another
and another, that's what I always do when they have some in stock, finally I found
one that sounded just right and played well. Finally, I thought I'd jsut have a short
look in the electrics room, just for fun, and who was hanging there? a 62 black telecaster
with binding and mint green guard. I picked it up, and after 5 seconds I knew I had to have it.
They guy walked in, saying they were about to close (maybe he figured I wasn't going
to buy anything anyway), and I said: "May I buy that guitar first?", grinning all over.
It plays like a dream. I didn't een bother plugging it in. I remember seeing it there a
few months ago, and I had to grab it before it's gone. When it's here, I'll post some
pics, its so niiiice!!!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I've got an older one of these in red.  They're really killer guitars.  Look great too.  :)

Agreed-the MIJ Tele Customs w/binding that I've played have all been REALLY nice.  I passed up a bound '62RI Custom Esquire at a guitar show a few years back for $350 because the decal just said "Telecaster".  Apparently that's how they were done in the 80s/90s runs.  That was a nice guitar.

I was just so excited when I wrote this down!

Additionally, I already found a replacement
PU with Alnico IIs for little money, njummy!

I passed up a bound '62RI Custom Esquire at a guitar show a few years back for $350 because the decal just said "Telecaster".
Those early MIJ Custom Teles and Esquires are really, really nice! Sometimes you'll see one that has aged and it really looks legit. I've had both a sunburst and a CAR. It always bothered me too that they didn't say "Custom" on them.... just Telecaster. I changed the neck on the Sunburst one because of that, going with an aftermarket slab neck and a silkscreen decal. I also put a MIA green guard on it and AVRI pickups. It was really sweet. I'd like to build another like that someday, if I ever get caught up with my other stuff. I have a tendency to get all excited about a new project and push the unfinished one to the back burner (and sometimes off the stove completely and selling the parts).

Allparts currently offers the bound sunburst body and I think it's also actually MIJ. It looks really nice....

Nice, mint green is a great color. Did it have the bridge cover and everything?
I've been thinking about getting one for a while, but my local stores only have the extremely overpriced(roughly 2.800$) MIA version.

It comes without the bridge cover, but I don't really mind.
It just played so comfortably. 2.8000 is a lot of money.
Why don't you order one online? There's at least 3 stores
here in Germany who sell that CIJ model at € 699.- ...

I wouldn't mind either since it's purely cosmetic. Unless someone's throwing bottles at you at a gig...

Good advice. I get most of my gear from thomann.de, though i'm one of those paranoid people who like to try a guitar out before buying.
