The Squier Affinity Strats made in Indonisia are damn good guitars  (that's one my nephew is holding in the picture thingy to the left... over there .. yeah that's right.... no left)

Necks feel extremely good, fit and finish is reasonable, can be set up to play just like an expensive guitar....  I would say the only thing that would need replacing in years to come would be to get some more decent PUPs into it... but at 9 years , my nephew doesn't care about such things.

best thing is they're cheap

CNC machines don't care what country they make guitars in these days !!!
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

I'm surprised that noone has mentioned the Squire '51 yet. The're going out of production, so they may be blown out by online retailers.

The're really great guitars. Simple, but you've got a variety of tonal colors possible, especially with the coil tap. No tone control, but that didn't stop Van Halen. *rawk*

You can't beat a Rondo SX XJM fake jazzmaster - $139.  http://www.rondomusic.net/sjm62.html

Trem works great and the p90's sound fine.

An ALDER ALDER ALDER squire tele is the way to go! Get one with a HB bridge and a single neck Pup, thats the best.
