(Nearly) NGD - 1964 Levin 350

Post by Despot » Sun May 24, 2015 8:58 am

I first mentioned this guitar back in March when I had picked it up from Fenderguy - he'd been very up front with me during the sale and disclosed that it probably needed a neck reset ... so I bought it on that basis.

It ended up needing quite a bit more work ... but that wouldn't have been obvious to Fenderguy (but quite possibly was obvious to the store that sold it to him!). The neck angle was indeed off ... and the strap button on the upper bout was caved in ... both suggesting a repair following a neck break. That was held up by what the luthier found when he took the neck off - the neck part of the dovetail joint had been broken clear away from the neck and glued back (and not the greatest job either). The luthier repaired the dovetail and reset the neck ... it took quite a while for this work to be done, hence the delayed NGD. But ... here it is in all it's Scandinavian glory!

I haven't been able to find much information online about these ... I've known about Levin acoustics thanks to Shadowplay and others on here recommending them ... but I wasn't aware that they also (briefly) made hollow body electrics. The body size is closer to a Duo Jet than a Starfire, despite the similarities in shape. With the DeArmond pickups this certainly sounds a whole lot like a few old Gretsch guitars I've heard.

Before the neck reset the bridge was completely decked (and still the action was too high) ... now there's about 12mm to play with at the bridge. At the moment the action is a little higher than I normally go with, but at least now I have the room to take it down. It would help with the string tension a bit too ... at the moment, with .11s, this is just a shade too tight for me ... but bringing the action down a shade will lessen the tension a little.

The neck profile feels quite modern - it's certainly a slim 60s neck ... but with Gibson nut width. It feels great to play, even to someone like me who normally prefers thicker necks. And ... I mean ... just look at this thing! The styling is just so classy ... and I love the Levin truss rod cover

The paint is actually pretty checked ... I've tried to catch the patina in the light here:

This guitar worked out more expensive that I thought it would (new nut, fret work, neck reset and repair to the break in the top bout where the strap button had been caved in), but I knew this one was worth saving. A vintage Dynasonic equipped Gretsch would have set me back a whole hell of a lot more than this did, and I'm pretty sure the Levin is a lot nicer than even the modern 50s reissue Duo Jets. I'm very happy with this guitar - cheers again Fenderguy!

I love that you've taken the time to resurrect such a worthwhile guitar, it's probably better now than it was brand new! Congrats again, such a cool acquisition.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Thanks guys. :)

I've been playing this all day ...it's a completely different guitar to the one I took out of the case a few months ago. And DeArmonds may just be my favourite pickup.

After Jazzmaster pickups.

And P90s.

But yeah ... absolutely my favourite. Totally.

Beautiful guitar, such a cool package- the simple and elegant black/white binding/ polished metal, single florentine cutaway, Dynasonics, Hag trem. So many cool ingredients- great to see it resurrected. :-* 8)

Thanks folks - now that it plays as well as it looks I'm very happy with it.

I fell in love with the look of it from Michael's for sale thread ... and that was before I got to hear the old dynas (which are incredible sounding pickups). I briefly had a white top dynasonic equipped Starfire III from around the same year (it too had neck angle issues that I didn't take the time to address) and these pickups sound pretty similar (which is to say amazing!).

I need to stick up some photos of the case too ... it came with it's original off white tweed covered case, with a wonderful green plush interior. The case itself is a work of art!

Thanks folks.

I had an unplugged play off between the Levin and the ES345 last night - different beasts, I know (given that the ES345 is a semi rather than full hollow), but damned if the little Levin beat off the stiff competition of the vintage Gibson in that test! Very similar neck profiles too in terms of feel - thinner medium, but not ultra thin, wide and rounded at the back.

I think I have more of a vintage hollow body problem than an offset problem these days. Just doing a mental check list of the old hollow/semis:

- '67 Gretsch Tennessean
- '65 ES330
- '62 ES345
- '64 Levin 350

That's pretty much all bases covered for me. :) I need to do a family photo of the four of them some sunny day soon.

Kevin, come on , you forgot the dark horse in the family that you haven't got yet, a thin line with mini HBs. -
Namely a Riviera, Sheraton or even a Sorrento.

You know you want to complete the family .... :D
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

I need an Epiphone ... that's for sure. Someday soon maybe...

I still eye up that sparkling burgundy Sheraton that was in Southside Guitars ... beautiful.

Such a unique and classy guitar! Not sure most folks would take the time and patience you have, but still it's paid off!
Love it!

Agree with Sook, you need an Epi with minis.
