Shipping is discounted at the $199 price. It is actually $250+ to ship. So it is discounted. We only have a few of these left on order.

Cheers,

Mason
Have you tried ordering through a different shop? I'm getting my Starcaster Bass through Dave's Guitar Shop in Wisconsin. They're exceptional when it comes to new Fender stuff...and old Fender stuff...and pretty much everything. I'm unsure of their shipping prices though.

Daves is taking pre orders?

Looks like they cheaped out and made them all black - these do look like a re-issue designed by an accountant
Haters gonna hate!

Given the price difference between the reissues and the original I am happy to let such a minor thing slide
What's hating about that? :fp: What I hate are stupid clichés, commenting on design changes isn't hate. You might want to think before you write.

I wrote that it looks like it's designed to meet a lowish price, which is accurate. The TOM and 335 style circuit is obviously evidence of this, they can just use off-the-shelf wiring designs and parts out of standard inventory. It's from the finite element project management school of guitar design. It's design is all about cost management and existing inventory reuse.

Doesn't mean it'll be a bad guitar but it's not a re-issue, it's a variation on the original theme; the shape is similar though not identical, it has the distinctive head-stock (which I have always really liked), it has two 'WRHB'(-alike) pickups. It's doesn't have 5 control knobs, through body stop tail bridge, bullet truss rod adjust, microtilt adjust, same circuitry, f-hole shape is different, neck mounting looks different.

For some that means it will never be a real Starcaster. I'm actually not one of them as I think the silhouette is enough to justify calling it one. I may even buy one and mod it - but I'd probably be more incline to get a Bilt Volar'e.

I mean there wasn't a choice in the past, if you wanted one you had to pay what they were going for on Ebay. I think very few people will pay the huge price difference for a vintage starcaster when most will be happy with one of these. It will be interesting to watch. If a vintage model gets in the below $2000 range I would probably jump, but I can't see how a 70's Fender flop should be getting more than that. I love them and all, but we are a minority in the guitar world.
I totally agree. I think princes will come way down. I've always wanted one. But told myself I'd never pay over $2000 for one. I just can't see them keeping their $4000 range price tag when these come out.

You can grab a vintage tele deluxe for around $2000ish. Starcaster should be the same after the reissue.
I'm not so sure, at least if it follows the trend of tele deluxes: the vintage ones were almost reasonable before the reissues came out. Now a real deal is about twice as much as it was before the reissues. (Caveat: it's also been about ten (?) years, so there is the normal inflation for vintage guitar prices. Maybe the original tele deluxes are more expensive now because they are relatively that many years more "vintage").

Or, to restate the question:
Do reissues drive up the price of the "real deal"? (Worth following: Coronado, Guild Starfire II/IV, Starcaster, etc)
I don't see any way it could possibly drive the price up on vintage starcasters, those prices are outrageous already and have surely peaked. Now every Fender dealer will have a close enough copy on their wall that offers a realistic option. Plus, I really think it may be unfair to compare vintage prices on starcasters to vintage tele price trends. Teles have a much much larger fan base of collector nerds! I may be proven wrong, but if I was a vintage starcaster owner and was on the fence about selling it... now would be the time before everyone catches on that these are coming out!

Anyone know where I could buy some knobs that look like the original ones?

The only thing that will come close is to buy a reissue Fender Blender Fuzz pedal, and use the knobs off one of those. I purchased some knobs from a supplier gutter rock found that looked really close. But they ended up being much smaller than the actual starcaster knobs.

I currently have 2 starcaster knobs on my Zaftig. Thinking about buying a fender blender just for the knobs :fp:

Yeah, here is the original discussion on the knobs I found:

http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... bs#p997407

I think the smaller size knob on a jazzmaster will look okay, but on a Jag or Bass VI the chrome plate just seems to swallow the smaller knobs too much. The next size up is GIGANTIC though and looks silly as well. A reissue Blender pedal as Blake480 suggested is really the only solution that I have found so far to get the real deal. You could resell the pedal with some cheap knobs on it and get some money back after you swipe the blender knobs.
