Thanks to some help from forum members, and especially to theworkoffire's thread on his own SG-5a, my recently purchased Yammy is all fixed up and has a working trem again!
See all the pics on my Facebook page here:

There will be more to come as I attempt to re-shield the body cavity once the paint arrives.
Whammy on!

Got to have that trem, great!
I played theworkoffire's SG5 briefly, they are amazing guitars. I can't think of anything else that it felt like really... Kind of like a super-precision-engineered JM perhaps – was a joy to play.

Congratulations! It's definitely worth the effort to get those Yamaha trems working again.

Looks amazing, and thanks for posting the detailed photos of the collet adaptation. I have one that I may end up doing exactly the same with.

Thanks Gavanti, I was very keen to pass that along in hopes that it might help someone else!
And rexter, I totally agree with you: there's a unique feel to the Japanese guitars I've played, and especially this one (being the only one like it I've laid hands on). It's hard to describe, but man I love it!
