Fender neck mounting screw sizes for shortscales
Hi there, quick question (I hope): are the original Mustang or Shortscale NECK screws a bit shorter than the standard fender neck screws? I have a 65 neck and have the feeling that those aftermarket (Fender) screws would go into the Fretboard if I use them on a Mustang project guitar (60's body and neck). They really seem to long... (the neck heel on such models is much thinner than on JM's, Jags, Strats and so on)....

Probably, take a measurement and see what length you really need.

I didn't use different than "standard" screws in my Mustang.
Measure the total body depth along with the neck, and the depth that the screws reach into your neck before just randomly trying any screw, though.

Re: Fender neck mounting screw sizes for shortscales
I think that the only odd-sized screws that Fender ever used were for Coronados and the neck-bolt acoustics in the late 60s (Malibu, Redondo, Shenandoah/Villager, etc). Mustangs and DuoSonics used standard screws - I've used reissue F neckplates and the (stock) screws that came with them on both 25.5" scale and 24" scale models. But as was already posted, size it up before you start doing anything. But unless the neck pocket was altered, you should be fine with stock screws.

Re: Fender neck mounting screw sizes for shortscales
Thanks all, please have a look at the below....that's why I'm wondering and worrying
So I have a set of standard neck screws, 4,5 cm or appx 1 3/4 inches long
I'm 100% sure that the neck pocket itself was not altered but the body itself is likely at bit slimmer than a standard Mustang body.
Sorry for the bad pics but you'll clearly see on pic 2 what the issue would be (glad that I didn't just screw them in, phew...)
ISSUE:
How to solve this? Shall I just cut off the screws or where to get proper shorter ones?

Get a couple toothpicks or something thin and long like that and see how deep they fit into the hole, then compare with the screw length. That will show you if your current screws will fit, or if not, then it'll show you approx. what length of new screw to get.

Thanks, I did that, using a very thin screwdriver. So fact is: the "standard" neck screws are too longStratelejazzuar wrote:Get a couple toothpicks or something thin and long like that and see how deep they fit into the hole, then compare with the screw length. I hope I get shorter screws somewhere?

Re: Fender neck mounting screw sizes for shortscales
I removed a neck screw of my 65 mustang and it's indeed 2 mm shorter than the reissue one:
Next "problem" is that the neck has a slab board
so 100% sure that the RI screws would go INTO the fretboard

Any good?

I've got 22.5" necks that I've used standad size on but guess if these are listed on all parts there's a need for them!

Re: Fender neck mounting screw sizes for shortscales
these are probably too short, so I think I just cut off the tips of the screws that I already have
no idea, maybe I'll give them a try...
thanks anyway !!!

Re: Fender neck mounting screw sizes for shortscales
It's obviously not authentic or the best or first option I'd go with, but if you're having a hard time, I wonder if those fender neck plate gaskets would raise the plate up enough to give you the depth needed? I've seen them on some 70s guitars, so it's not exclusively modern. Just a thought if all else fails.
