Personally, I don't think I've ever seen an original black offset with a tort pickguard. All the ones I've seen have mint. I've always taken the combination to be a sure sign of refinishing.

The L prefix came sometime in late 1962.Johno wrote:Is the neck plate original, I thought it would have an L prefix being pre 65?
"At the very end of 1962 and into 1963, Fender changed to a system where serial numbers began with an "L." According to some accounts, the L was supposed to just be a 1 to mark the cross over into the 100,000 range from the previous scheme, but an L was used by mistake."

This is super cool! I was eyeing that one thinking it would be a cool project. Glad you're leaving the headstock. totally the right move. I vote black n tort. Can't beat that combo. You could always hunt for an original mint guard and have either or depending on your mood.

Black may be a safe choice, but it's classic and doesn't get old, IMO. The again, I always wished I refund my old 64 in shoreline. I went safe with an Oly refin and ended up flipping it. But that may have been my Jaguar Gas calling.

Yeah... I don't love Shoreline gold, though I LOVE Aztec Gold. I think I'll have to that, which I guess wouldn't be correct, or black. Most likely the latter.kosmonautmayhem wrote:Cool! Good for you! As for screwing down the guard, thanks for the heads up. I planned on doing that, as I've experienced how tricky those guards can be on my '66 and '63...

Yep! Screw that guard down! I use a piece of press board from an old bookshelf. Super flat, super sturdy and was totally free.

Re: 1962 Fender Jazzmaster Restoration
Nice to see a vintage Jazzmaster getting restored.
For what it's worth, the guitar is autographed by the Ventures, the group that established the Jazzmaster as a must have guitar in the early 60s. The signatures are of Bob Bogle, Don Wilson (founding members), Leon Taylor (son of Mel Taylor, the Ventures drummer for most of the 60s and 70s) and Gerry McGee (lead guitar since '68). There's not massive value there, but just wanted to acknowledge the band that got a lot of kids, myself included, playing guitar and Jazzmasters in particular.

OK, now back to the regular programming....

Yes - I figured they would probably applaud the restorationMelWaldorf wrote:Nice to see a vintage Jazzmaster getting restored.

So here's a question for you guys, should I do repro single line Klusons or real '64 double line Klusons?

Repros, then wait patiently for a deal on double lines. You've got nothing to lose (unless it's one of the repros which needs 10mm ferrule holes, so not those).kracdown wrote:So here's a question for you guys, should I do repro single line Klusons or real '64 double line Klusons?

I'm all for repros. I wouldn't even bother with vintage keys unless they were included.

If it's affordable, then it makes sense. Lots of folks sell these at such a ridiculous premium. I saw some from andrewaward - are those his tuners? He's a good dude.
