Re: 1962 Fender Jazzmaster Restoration
I took the thing apart to start prepping in the body and found two problems I need help with....
First, the job someone did reaming out these tuner holes was pretty pathetic and sloppy... Two of them are HUGE holes... What should I do with these?
Second, someone put in these huge bridge thimbles that I need to know how to take out... The pick guard is stuck on it... Otherwise, it has barely shrunk.
Maybe this has been refined before? Look at this neck pocket:
But the trem has the original sunburst in it:

That's got all the hallmarks of an early JM. This body was pre paint stick. The neck pocket was painted fully. That looks like remnants of an original sunburst neck pocket. My early '63 Jag is like this.
The thimbles are the earlier tall style. They're also original. I haven't seen too many '62s with tall thimbles though. Compare your bridge to others you have. The legs should be slightly taller than the later ones to accommodate the taller thimbles.
Suck about the bad ream job. I'd do it right and have the holes plugged and redrilled.

hmm... is there a way to do this without having to refinish the headstock?kosmonautmayhem wrote:That's got all the hallmarks of an early JM. This body was pre paint stick. The neck pocket was painted fully. That looks like remnants of an original sunburst neck pocket. My early '63 Jag is like this.

I don't it would be easy but I bet someone could do it. I'm no woodworking expert though. Would love to know myself.

yeah, dowel and re-drill is probably best. Could do it without refinishing if you're careful, but that might be an "expert" job. The new bushings would likely cover the old battle wounds, at least mostly. I'd consult a professional.

Ugh, those tuner holes are disappointing.

Yup. Good news though, getting them filled and redrilled without any refinishing.lemat wrote:Ugh, those tuner holes are disappointing.

Chicago fret works. I've used third coast with decent results and had terrible experiences at CME's shop.kosmonautmayhem wrote:Awesome news! Where did you end up taking the guitar?

Yep, looks like the pocket in my slab '62 sunburst Jag too. Congrats by the way, should be lovely.kosmonautmayhem wrote:That's got all the hallmarks of an early JM. This body was pre paint stick. Re: 1962 Fender Jazzmaster Restoration
UPDATE: I decided to just dowel out the two larger holes and use conversion bushings. Should make it look pretty good and will be done later this week! Then I just need to prep the body and send it over to Dano...
