SX Liquid 12 String Conversion

Post by sirspens » Fri Dec 09, 2016 6:32 pm

I am picking up a project I set in motion at the beginning of the year, before having to take a pause from any extra-curricular activities so I could finish up my licensing exams.

I am converting an SX Liquid to a 12 string.

The guitar has a TOM bridge, which I have replaced with a 12 string version of a TOM. I ordered a 12 string neck from Best Guitar Parts (bestguitarparts.com). A note on the neck: for the most part it is good work, but the fretwork at the edges is shit, with pretty much every fret having a sharp edge.

I think I have found a paint that pretty closely matches the body color, and I am going to match the headstock, but finish the rest with TruOil.

I am also going to replace the three P90s with two Jazzmaster pickups.

The first thing I need to decide is on the pickguard design. The SX Liquid's volume knob is in a very unfortunate location, getting in the way of playing. So I am moving controls down the body. I have two designs for the pickguard, one that takes the guard quite far down the body, the other that is based on the Jaguar.

Large Pickguard:

Jaguar Style Pickguard:

Right now I am leaning toward the first design, although it is a huge pickguard.

1/ COOOOOOOOL project. This is going to be amazing.

2/ Definitely the first scratchplate. I think putting recognisable Jaguar parts on there would let down what's shaping up to be a really 'different' looking thing.

ps- totally out there idea, but this would look really cool with an archtop bigsby grafted on there, like a maton wedgtail. Obviously completely impractical and I'm not sure anyone ever needs to use a trem on a twelve string, but it would look cool.

Cool.
There's one on the local CL with a jm trem and a different headstock.
I've been trying to talk myself into buying it as project start...
(Christopher, also)
I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

I like the first pickguard design except for the square part around the bridge pickup. I think it could look better if you make it a bit rounder or if it follows the curve of the body a bit more.

Yeah you could keep the curve going halfway through the pickup like a Danelectro or Mosrite

I would be tempted to make something closer to the original pick guard but use a Gibson style 1/4" jack on the concave back section and shift the knobs down a spot.

That would be a bad idea if you want to preserve originality but it doesn't sound like you are after that.

I know this is a dead thread, but is there any update to this?
