Bought a 1963 Jazzmaster in pieces!

Post by supersonicjazzmaster » Mon Aug 14, 2017 9:18 am

Hi,

I am happy!!! I bought a Jazzmaster from 1963 in pieces. It was an ebay auction in Germany. I live also in Germany.
I hope the link below works!?
Those parts have been in a basement for about 35 years now. Someone wanted to "customize" the Jazzy?
So, frets are needed for the neck, the headstock is minimalized. The body is handpainted with a kind of dakota red.
All pieces are with the guitar. So I paid 1023€ for it. Good price. I guess I have to spend about 600€ into the restauration, so I have a ´63 Jazzy for a good price! I am waiting for the neck w. new frets these days.
The body: What do you think was it before? A sunburst one?
The pickguard is a bit shrunken, looks gorgeous!
What do you think about the electronics??? Should I use the original one complete? Or better complete new cables / potis?
Body: Refinish? What color? I am no sunburst fan. Nitro finish? I think about some kind of yellow/white w. matching head.

People out there? Is there anyone with experiences with such a parts Jazzy?

Thanks, cheers!!

Ok, first impressions.
The body was bad handpainted. Now it looks like a fiesta red wannabe.
I put a few parts on the body. Trem unit looks perfect!
Pickguard looks really nice in reality!
Bridge: Very rusty.
Pickup covers: Faded a lot into yellow, dirty look. Good!
Vol. Tone knob: Look great faded!
Electronics: Looks not bad!

it looks better than the pics in the ebay ad (even the body contours are still there, that wasn't clear from the ebay ad). But I am wondering, what is the actual condition of the fretboard? I hope it's not too messed up!?I would not worry about the state of the bridge, try to clean it with coke and a toothbrush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GicXnsrdhF0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and remember ...EVERYTHING can get fixed somehow :freako:

Good advice. It looks pretty funky in those pics, almost like the saddles have melted.

I'll be fascinated to see what you do with the neck. There have been some amazing restoration jobs on this forum & the headstock in particular looks like one hell of a challenge.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Plenty of experienced people around here. Just click through the vintage restoration section. Unfortunately a lot of threads got affected by that photobucket 3rd party hosting shit

You should also start a restoration thread there and people will jump in and help (especially if you need help on how to strip the body etc, how to save the pencil marks if they are still there etc).

Here is one of the most recent restoration threads that isnt affected by photobucket

Cool! I did something similar but not exactly as nice as yours--I put together my own JM from parts of two guitars because buying a new or used one was out of the question.

Thanks for the replies!
Bridge: Cool, yes, I´ll try this hack with the Coke! (never heard before about this... )
Yes, the saddles look like from the Titanic...

And, yes, the pics on ebay where not so meaningful..
It was a bit a poker of course...

The body has a weight of 2 kilos and 30 gramms. :)

Neck and headstock: The neck is at my guitar builder/tech man. He will rebuild the headstock. I want to have a matching head at last, so it will be good I guess. The fretboard is thin... there where no frets on the neck. So my guitar guilder will give new frets to the neck.
The keys are not usable anymore... Ok, I will spend a new set of vintage keys.

keep you updated.

have fun!

Yes yes! It´s in progress.
I started with stripping down the finish. I was very carefully, because I didn´t knew what was under the handpainted red?
So, there came up some white color! I jut thought that it is maybe original oly white??? But, at last I am nearly sure that it was a sunburst originally. Why? Take a look at the body, the neck pocket, the area for the pickups etc. And on the trem unit downside it looks also a bit sunburst.
It takes time to strip down the finish... I work very carefully, I don´t want to destroy the wood.
I also think about, WHAT color should this project have??? I will give it a matching head definitely. My girlfriend asked for a silver sparkle finish! (she said, my golden sparkle Hallmark Swept Wing looks fantastic, so a silver sparkle Jazzy would be also nice!)
Or better a trad color? sonic blue? shell pink?

Ok, here are some pics from the body meanwhile:
