accidental NGD '75 Mustang

Post by Con-Tiki! » Mon Nov 19, 2018 5:12 am

My intention was to build a beater Jaguar, so that my favorite Jaguar could be safe in it's case this winter. I had hardware, and bought a nice body on reverb, but needed a neck.
The search wasn't going great, so i started looking at anything 24" scale.
I bought this Mustang neck for $300 (which was over budget for the beater jag, but cheap i thought for a 'vintage' neck)

Anyway, it arrived, and was so clean that i didn't have the heart to use it on my project.
So, I got back online and bought the rest of it, in pieces, which we all know is the best way to save money on a vintage guitar. I even got the case. :fp:

It's back together. I missed the control plate, so the plate is used (thanks FenderBob) and the pots are new.
I dig it.

I've been to one World's Fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing i ever heard come out a pair of headphones.

awesome ! I think that guitars this clean are always worth saving. btw correct me if I'm wrong, but why do you have the bridge backwards?

sometimes it works better to have it "backwards" because of the brake angle. you dont want the screws rubbing against the strings.

yep.
I'm not sure if it's always the case, but the strings were seriously buzzing on the screw heads.
even with it backwards, the center strings are touching the bridge tray. Seems okay though.

Your Mustang bridge looks like it might be an import bridge, which usually have longer, 18mm M3 intonation screws. To lessen that problem you can swap them for 16mm. But with a bridge where you can't adjust saddle height, you have fewer parameters to play with to keep the strings from hitting screws or the walls of the bridge tray. The higher the bridge, the greater the break angle, and the more likely that the strings will touch something.

you may be right about the bridge. it came with everything else, so i assumed it belonged.
If i can get some $ together, i may get a mastery for it. I know they're not for everyone, but i put one on my Jaguar and love it.

You probably spent more money than you wanted to, but I think you did the right thing not only for your project and yourself, but also in keeping this guitar together like it was meant to be. Good show!

Ok, problem: you now have a "beater" that is way too nice to be a beater. Nice problem to have.

It looks fantastic, btw. Good job!

Ah yes, a situation easily remedied by further application of $.
There will be a thread in mods/projects soon...
