I've never been so jealous, and I own a perfect gold guard. Looking out for a stripped gold guard to send to Danocaster... :? :? :?

I'm so glad this thing survived the 1980s unscathed. Just wow.

This photo was taken in 1959 (page 194 of Fender The Sound Heard 'Round The World). Note also the maple neck version:

I’ve seen that one :)

I’ve done some more research on it and gotten some valuable input from some who are very well versed in 50s custom colors - the thinking on mine is that it was part of a small run for a trade show in late ‘58 or early ‘59 - they may have made as many as 6 but probably more like 2 or 3 in gold, along with some in red, blonde, etc.

Most-likely the guitar was bought by the original owner at the show, and the color is not shoreline gold but probably a popular gold color from ‘57 or ‘58.

The undercoat on the guitar is very different from the 60s custom colors, a white base with a sort of blueish grey coat over the top to which the gold paint was applied. This is one sure way to identify a legit and original 50s custom color finish and without this undercoat it’s most-likely refinished.

Here's a closeup of the body, you can see the reddish/coppery hue a bit better, here...

That is probably the most beautiful custom colour I've seen, of whatever guitar. Such lovely condition, too, just enough wear to make it pop.

I hope you enjoy playing it for many decades.

Thanks, man. It is for me as well, such a great-looking JM. Plays and sounds great, too!

Thanks for the extra photos. In a world where every guitar is "RARE!" it's a treat to see something that is truly unique from very early in the model run.

Aw man, I knew I saw this axe in a thread and I couldn’t remember where it was. But now I found the thread and can post this in the right place: Misirlou
