1963 Jazzmaster Gold Refin

Post by toinouBE » Sat Jan 12, 2019 1:54 am

Hello,

here's my 1963 Jazzmaster
It was refin in Shoreline Gold at some point , I guess a while ago cause the paint is cracking already.
It used to belong to dutch rock star Andy Tielman, from the Tielman Brothers. He used to make a 10 string guitar out of his guitars. Doubling strings 2 3 4 & 5.
That's why you see old holes on the headstocks for tuners ....

Bridge was replaced at some point (I have the original) , otherwise it's all original
Bridge pickup is one of the best thing I've heard in my life !

Here's a little video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cg0YO-cOF8

That pickguard isn't original either, I'm afraid.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Looks great. I have a guitar that was Tielman-ised, too.

What's the story of yours and where it came from?

I don't have much infos about it.
I bought it 3 years ago from TFOA shop in The Netherlands.
The story was that Andy Tielman madea 10 string out of it. that explains the extra holes in the headstock, and the original nut with 10 string routes.
Then, it appears to be sold and refinished in gold in the 70's ... but no infos on that

Great guitar. Congratulations!
Sounds fantastic too.

The only thing I'd change is the pickguard, especially if it's not original anyway. That's just a matter of taste of course. It's just that gold and tortoise together look very... drug lord-y to me.

If you're into this look, customworldguitarparts.com (in the Netherlands) sell very nice anodized gold guards. Still quite a brash combo of course. I think I'd probably go with a white guard myself.

It was obviously played by one of the followers of Tielman. There are dozens of guitars like this, so you'd need real evidence to associate it with a particular player. Still an interesting guitar, of course.

My guitar was Tielman-ised, went from blonde to red to white and is now blonde again.

I've seen at least eight on this forum, it's where I found out what had happened to my guitar! Someone estimated that around 25% of all vintage Jazzmasters in the German market had been tielman-ised. 1963 seems to be a particularly big year for them.

Yeah I wouldn't jump to conclusions on it being owned by Tielman himself, there's a lot of old Jazzy's out here with extra tuner holes. Indo-rock was a real hype back then and a lot of young musicians jumped on the bandwagon.
Could be true though, TFOA is quite a nice and reliable shop afaik.

Yes there's no proof
Just that it was advertised this way by TFOA.
And I consider them as a very reliable shop !
And, honestly, the fact that it was or not played/oned by Tielman, doesn't add any value to me.

In the end, it's just a great old Jazzmaster, that sounds amazing !
i might buy another one someday, in original condition. but as far as my ears are concerned, it's a great axe !
