1962 Fender Jaguar

Post by Trickey89 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 9:00 pm

Hey guys,

Just bought this beauty and wondered if anyone could shed some light on original parts or not. I know the pickup covers have been changed as the broken ones are in the case. Im also assuming the pickguard has been swapped as per one of the holes in it not having a hole in the body for a screw. I also think the mute is a repro cos of the foam. Everything else seems legit as far as i could tell but if anyone can shed any light on it please do. I plan on swapping out the bridge and mute with a mastery anyway but just curious to know!

Congratulations!
The pickguard looks like an AVRI one, I believe early jaguars came with a nine hole pickguard so that's why the body is missing a hole. The mute looks a bit too clean, obviously someone could have replaced the foam, but compared to the ageing on the rest of the hardware it looks like it's a repro. The hight adjustment screws for the pickups should be phillips head and have most likely been replaced at some point.

Oh, nice! I'm in Adelaide, I'd messaged the guy about this Jag a few times but couldn't get the cash together right now.

Bummer about the pick guard. I hope you got a deal, though! That finish looks great and that fretboard is AWESOME.

Is the rest OK..no routes under the pickguard?? That’s the biggest concern for a guitar with a changed pickguard, wrong pickup screws etc

Maybe the mute loojsy newer because it stayed in the case for a long time. I know most people don't use them

No routes under the pick guard! Is there usually a date on the pickups themselves? And it’s quite possible the mute is old and has had the foam replaced. The guy who sold it to me was selling it on behalf of his brother and didn’t really know too much about the guitar.

Finish is original, at least.

A better guard--either period correct, or a good Spitfire reproduction--would pretty up the guitar significantly

THIS! And I just do happen to have an original tort guard that came off of a ‘62.

Send me a message if this is something yr thinking about.

I prefer the mid/late-60s look a lot more than the earlier tort.

That's a really nice guitar. You don't see many 1962 Jaguars, and that one is early.

Finish looks original. It's worth finding a correct pickguard for the guitar. Take some time and get the right parts on it so it is complete.

The pickup height adjustment screws are not correct. Tough to tell from the photos but the pickups looks like the correct flat pole type from that period. It may be worth taking a look under the metal claws at the bobbin.
