1963 Jazzmaster; slab, veneer, fake or ???

Post by slimdave » Mon Feb 18, 2019 6:12 am

Hi folks.

A friend of mine is about to buy a 1963 refin JM. The owner sent him a pic of the neck dates. The veneer looks quite thick.
What's your thoughts on this? Real or repaired? Does the stamp look legit?

Here's a pic:

Thanks in advance.

hm, I've once seen a 65 Strat with a re-done fretboard but that was far more noticeable. I still understand why you are wondering about it, it's thicker and a bit more imprecisely cutted and glued than it should be. I am also not sure but currently think it's been redone. Do you have a picture of the headstock as well as from the side of the neck (side dots)?
Here is a pic of my '63 JM neck heel:

Looks somewhat off indeed. Way too thick. I don't think it's a slab, as slab fretboards are not curved at the heel.

Also, by that pic it looks like the neck's radius is flatter than 7.25, but it may be just the angle . Moar pics needed I guess.

the earliest veneer boards were thicker, but I can’t see your pics to tell...

Hmm, weird. They're gone!

I saw them before and, yeah, that neck looked midway between a veneer & a slab board.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.
