Unexpected NGD: Hondo 760h-12

Post by rbrcbr » Sun Mar 17, 2019 6:36 am

Been looking at 12 strings rather casually lately, and happened upon this guy while at GC last night to pick up some pedals I ordered with a credit from a promotion they had going on. Matching headstock caught me immediately. The fact that it has 12 Grover tuners made it even better. Apparently this is a super modded version, they usually came with two humbuckers. I dig the lipsticks though but the humbucker is too hot, might swap it for another lipstick, or keep it for a boost when playing live. Pickguard is super quirky but I kind of dig it. Might swap it for a mint guard though. I already swapped the skull speed knobs it had for some white strat knobs. The hardware overall is super solid, this thing feels like a hell of a guitar for $300. I've already written the beginnings to a new song on it. Very stoked!

That one was used by sonic youth (probably not the actual guitar)

Yeah, I noticed that too. Wondering if that is problematic or not. It plays and sounds fine to me, only issue so far is the low G intonation is slightly off while the high G is spot on, and the individual strings are not adjustable as they're two per saddle. Is this something you'd worry about? I figure it's just anchoring the strings, right?

It is only a problem if it is affecting the strings path over the bridge.

Dont worry about it otherwise.

It looks like a good get.

Hope it sounds good.

The Korean Hondos from this era can be really good. I'm all over the internet blabbing about how good the 335 copy I had was (and it was only £60!!).

IMC (the company that owned Hondo) had worked with Tokai on their Hondo professional series in the late 70s. IMC were making Hondos in Korea at the Samick factory concurrently and later used the Tokai guys and their expertise to help them improve production methods which resulted in a fairly major leap in quality in the early 80s. Epiphones from that period also seem to be quite sought-after, too.

Anyway, I might be teaching your Grandma to suck eggs. Should be a solid workhorse for you and I love that cheeky Fame logo.

Enjoy your new found Fame!
