500 K pots for Jazzmasters?

Post by cpeck » Sat Dec 02, 2006 5:30 pm

My friend recently turned me on to the idea of putting 500k pots in Jazzmasters.  He has them installed in his 1963 JM, and it sounds really great - loses a little of the sometimes icepick to the head quality.  Has anyone else modded their JMs this way?  Good results?

I received a partsmaster that had the pots changed out to 500k.  It definitely "softens" things and probably brings the overall tone more in line with other guitars.  For me, that defeated the point and it just didn't sound or feel like a classic jazzmaster, so I changed them out right away.  But I suppose if you need to switch between guitars a lot live, it could be useful, especially if you just love the feel of a JM.

I'll be experimenting with 250k, 500k and 1 meg pots in my three-pickup jag project. (index.php?topic=737.0 )  The current plan is to use 250k pots in the main section and 1meg or 500k pots in the "rhythm" circuit (rather than the usual values for just the neck pu)  I'll post my findings when I'm done.  I'd like to be able to switch between  a Strat or Jag sound depending on the circuit.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it, but being that I'm the only guitar player in my quite loud band, it seems to be a necessary evil at this point.

A nifty idea?

I was thinking it would be cool to wire up a three-position rotary switch with three different-value resistors (1M, 500K, 250K specifically) where the volume pot is.  That way you could toggle between the diffrent tones.  I think it would be like having your volume up all the way all the time, but of course you'd have three "volume pot" settings to choose from.  A wiring nightmare though, I'm sure.
