Is there a custom shop worth the money?
No. Buy two AV65s, and honestly probably pretty often, 3 AV65s, for the same amount of money.
Woah. Hold on there a sec. For some players, in fact a lot of them, Custom Shop isn't really needed. Guitars are guitars and it's pretty easy to get a decent tone at any price point you're comfortable with, but I'd say that Custom Shop can ABSOLUTELY be worth the money for some people (like me). If the OP likes certain specs and colors that aren't readily available (or ever even produced) in any production models. They cost more, but they also hold their value pretty well.

If you just like sunburst, or the more common color finishes and 7.25" or 9.5" neck radii, then I'd say DO NOT go custom unless you realllllly need some specific relicing or whatever. I got mine built to my specs in 2008 and I have never looked back. YES it costs more, but it killed a large portion of my guitar-flipping gas, and I have a really unique and special guitar that is getting better with age. It probably saved me from buying (and selling) at least two or three guitars.

I know we can all do Warmoth partscasters, Danocasters, BiLT, and other custom builders. They can all be cool-- but getting the official brand is pretty schweet. I have never regretted or second-guessed my decision [though plenty have].

Well, I have a CS '58 and a AVRI '62. I also have played the other american reissue avaiblable in Montréal (AV65, the AO and the '58 anniversary reissue). My CS feels more solid then those guitars (including my AVRI '62). If it's 1k$-2K$ more solid, that's very subjective... But CS are better most of the time.

If the OP can find a used CS for 2k$ and wants the best, he should absolutly buy it. I doubt it's possible to find a such good deal.

Yeah 10/10 if I could get a jazzmaster with a 12” radius and a specific fake aging around the forearm with my absolute favorite color, every time I’d turn that down in favor of spending the same amount of money on three Jazzmasters with non-fake aging and a marginally different fret radius in colors I’m not totally enablers with.

Diff’rnt strokes I guess

My CS doesnt have any relicing (apart from the one I did with my own playing), nor it have a different radius (9,5) or a rare color (Sherwood green). The only "custom option" is a one piece maple neck; it was rare at the time, now many Jazzmaster model have one. It's just a better guitar then normal production...

Diff'rnt strokes I guess ;)

I played a Road Worn Mexican Jazzmaster last night. It was OK, I wasn't a fan of the feel of the neck. Today I'm going to go track down an AVRI'62 and AV65, wish me luck. ;)

Yeah I mean, everything is subjective, but especially music gear. Some people like things I have a hard time ever understanding how anyone could feel anything but sustain toward, and I’m sure it goes both ways.

I mean, somehow, literally millions of Americans think that Donald Fucking Trump being president is anything other than totally unacceptable and embarrassing and unforgivable, let alone the millions of people who see his in this case actually, totally, objectively horrible and harmful behavior and policy as fucking awesome.

The world is shit. Fuck this place. I do, however, have a highly heightened sense of having o find deals on things and that ability makes up like, 70% of how I feel about any particular thing. So if I’m looking at a Fender Custom Shop Journeyman 69 Jazzmaster that for all intents and purposes looks the same as any other typical 62 reissue, and it costs $6,000 or something, my mind immediately goes to “well I could own 3 or even 4 AV65 Jazzmasters for that kind of money” and puts up a serious barrier in the way of me being able to defend the custom shop thing in any way. Some people see an artificially-yellowed white Jazzmaster that is something they’ve just got to have. If they can afford it, more power to them.

Would heavily recommend a Thin Skin, '62, '65, '59 - pick your poison. There is a reason you don't see many used.

Also, CS stuff is truly way better... worth the price? Dunno, but cost aside they are for sure better in every way in my experience...

...but for the price the Thin Skins are really top notch.

I can only speak for Jags here because I haven't played CS JMs, but I have played 3 really nice (and expensive) CS Jags since owning my IBM AV65 Jag, and I didn't like any of them more than my AV65. In fact I wouldn't trade my AV65 (in a straight swap) for any of them. ;) I did think the CS Jags were nicer than my AVRI62 (which I have since sold), however.

FWIW.

Fair enough - when I bought my last thin skin JM, it was down to it and a used CS one, and I came home w/ the thin skin. The CS guitar felt better, had better sounding pickups and really first rate fretwork, and wouldn't have needed an immediate bridge swap... but it wasn't worth the extra $900 to me. After many years of owning various Gibson/Fender CS guitars and various boutique makers, I'm happier now w/ my two thin skin JMs. I don't feel like I made the wrong choice there at all - though I would like a set of those pickups...

A big ol’bump! I ordered a Thin Skin last night! I will be getting it late next week. I chose a ‘65 Thin Skin in Aztec Gold. It is second hand, comes all original, but with a Mastery Bridge and Emerson pots in the case. The cost delivered was under $1900, so I am happy.

My jazzmaster arrived after getting lost for a couple of days by the carrier. I haven’t had much time with it, but initial thoughts are positive. The neck shape is about perfect. I replaced the stock bridge with the mastery and like it a bit better. Pics and ngd post soon
