That's a substantial difference. Thanks for doing the test.
No problem. I also read that giving the wood a coat of finish (shellac? oil?) can accelerate the process.

Color is on the headstock. I'm not sure that I love this shape, but then I don't think anyone has ever improved on the original Fender shapes.

I've decided on the name "Voyager" after the Voyager space probes that explored the outer planets of the solar system and have been in operation since 1977.

Whoo! I managed to create my own decal. I don't pretend to be a graphic designer, but I'm pretty happy with this. It just needs some clear coat now.

Looks good. It'll be great with the clear on it.

I didn't forget about this project. Winters in Colorado normally give me lots of warm, clear, low humidity days that are good for spraying. And we did get a lot of those, but only on weekdays. So it's only been the last few weekends when I've been able to spray.

I did end up sanding the body back to the sealer and redoing the color coat. It's looking much better now. I'm getting the clear coats laid on slowly. There's about five on there now.

The neck is done now though.

The weather should be better for awhile - until the monsoon season starts. I just need to be diligent about spraying the body when I can.

This is such a cool thread. Did you ever wind up finishing the Voyager?

This is finished up. I had done a few posts in my general project thread and kind of forgot to update this one. I've been sitting on the finished pics for a few weeks now, but this seems like a fine time to post them. So...

I was not particularly diligent about spraying clear coats and it had lots of opportunity to cure between coats while hanging in my dilapidated shed. It was even there during our final snow of the season, a heavy spring snow that broke many branches on my aging trees and left a coat of snow on the body. After all of that, I decided it deserved to come inside and be assembled. There was such a small amount of orange peel in the clear coats, that I elected to skip level sanding and went straight to polishing. It's not a super glossy poly look, but more of an aged nitro sheen and the clear is very thin, so this one will start to age quickly and already has a few dings.

The Surf90s sound much better to me now in a short scale with 1meg pots than they had in a full scale with 500K.

Body: Poplar by me
Finish: Dupli-Color Avignon Blue Metallic & Deft Lacquer
Neck : Allparts JGRO, vintage Jag specs (7.25"Radius, vintage frets), TruOil finish
Decal: by me
Tuners: Gotoh SD91 nickel
String Tree: Gotoh barrel chrome
Nut: bone
Neckplate: Gotoh Chrome
Vibrato: Allparts SB-0211
Bridge: import adjustable Mustang
Pickguard: WBW
Pickups: GFS Surf90s
Wiring: N/M/B toggle, master volume, slide switch to select between lead tone knob and a preset rhythm tone, Parallel/Series/Series Strangle toggle switch (kill switch when in either series position and the p/u selector on bridge)
Knobs: White Witch hats
Strings: 11-54 EB Beefy
Final weight: 7.75 lbs (3.5kg)

I still plan to get a few family pics as well, so stay tuned for that.

That came out great! I like the color with the chrome and white. How do those Surf-90's sound in there?

Oh, yeah, that headstock shape is really nice.

What the heck... I like that thing way too much and I'm seriously out of space for another guitar!! Argh!!

Among of the really several things that make it a one-off Jagstang is that you did a very good looking headstock and an unusual and quite tasty selection of hardware: awesome looking pickup, deliciously colour matched selector switch tip/pickguard and knobs, stunning and classy metal finish..
Damn, I love it.

Shame on you, criminally good looking build, Sir.

So, in their previous home, I found the Surf-90s to be dull and bass heavy (I've never been a fan of A2 pickups). In this guitar they are nicely balanced, not too bassy, not too bright. It's kind of like a jazzy strat sound. This guitar was to be the last chance for those pickups to prove themselves before I sold them, and they have.

Thanks. I wondered about those pickups. Boy, the guitar they're in sure makes a difference.

I already looked at this some time ago - coming - my question if someone already made a preset rhythm channel brought me back! Thanks SY6655321 for pointing out! So how do you like it?

And I have to admit: That thing is gorgeous! Love the IBM and it really goes well with the Surf90s too! I had them in my Thinline Jag (also with 1Meg pots) and only have disassembled them due to cosmetic reasons... but I‘m still in the game for a Olympic white Classic Player (or a Squier VM to mod - the fitting pickguard is already there!) Thank you for pointing out their tonal difference with the 24“ scale!

Thanks! I'm really happy with the preset rhythm switch and have it in three other guitars now. It's a very easy mod to wire up and is very useful with fuzz, or for jazzier tones. Resistors are pretty cheap too, so it's easy to fine tune the values to suit your tastes.

That is great to hear! Thank you PearDream! :) I'm really looking forward to do this on my soon to arrive custom Jazzmaster. Basically I could start with the wiring this very weekend as the pickups arrived yesterday! Let's see what resistors I have left in my drawer.
