NGD - Late Sixties Höfner 4550 - with more pictures & video !

Post by Flurko » Tue May 07, 2019 2:44 pm

So, I was looking at pretty guitars on Reverb at work, as one does, and after weeks of hesitation, I decided to buy one that looked particularly pleasing to me.
It's half an impulse buy (I didn't know this particular model existed a few weeks ago, and I reallly don't know if I'll like it because I've never played a guitar exactly like that), and half an itch I wanted to scratch for more than ten years, as I've recently unearthed some doodles I made of guitars exactly like this one when I was in high school.

I dug out my DSLR, here's some more pictures (And I apparently still can't shoot non-blurry pictures, nor can I color-grade my images correctly...)

Edit :
It's and old Höfner 4550 from the late sixties!
Here's the picture that made me click "add to basket" :

It's not that hard to guess what it is :
-It's 50-ish years old
-European
-I might want to mod it (obviously in a non-intrusive way) if I want to get weird with it, but it will be a perfectly fine guitar as is for the time being
-The band i loved in high school which made me love these kind of guitars is Queens of the stone age (can't stand most of their recent output, but I loved them back in 2007)
-Since my musical tastes have slightly evolved in the last decade, I was reminded of my love for these guitars by people like Eric Chenaux or Mary Halvorson (I won't post links in this first post, it's too easy !)

Shoot !

It's not a Hagstrom, but you've got the first letter right!

An old Höfner it is !
Model 4550, fully acoustic large-bodied archtop, without any electronic. I'll post the seller's pictures soon, while it is on its way between Ireland and France.

Haven’t listened to them after Era Vulgaris. Have I missed anything? I though good tunes on EV were few & far between. They seem to have lost their punk edge after Oliveri left.

I really loved Era Vulgaris when it came out, as the one album that came out after I fell deep for the band, it was "my" QOTSA record in a way. I liked TCV for a bit, mostly because I saw them on their first show billed as a mystery band, but they didn't stay with me as my tastes had drifted.

The most recent QOTSA albums bored me to death, and now I kind of dislike Josh Homme, who seems kinda a dick.

Cool, Hofners are great, I've got a 1964 Verithin and it's every bit as good as a Guild or Gretsch of that era

Sweet! What did I win? :w00t:

::)

Happy NGD and nice guitar! I'm also a fan of QOTSA but especially their last album really kind of put me off them. I just remember them sounding like a less interesting and inspiring version of themselves. Like Clockwork still had a couple of great songs on it.

You can ask me which song to butcher first on this beautiful guitar, when it arrives!

After waiting in Ireland for a week, it's in France ! I hope the final days of wait won't be too long.

NGD - Late Sixties Höfner 4550 - with video !

Post by Flurko » Thu May 16, 2019 10:49 am

Here it is !

I'm really happy about it!
The bridge was removed and the strings de tensioned, but the bridge's "tan line" made it easy to place again.

It's quite loud acoustically, with a really projecting voice.

Here's a simple video :
