Decal for JM vintage modified?

Post by Telover » Thu May 16, 2019 11:01 am

Hi all,
I'm refinishing my Squier JM vintage modified (or classic vibe?), changing the colour of the body,
However I was thinking about painting also the face of the headstock in the same colour. But to do this, I'd have to replace the decal since it'd come off while sanding.
Do you know if and where is it possible to get a replacement? Original, obviously.
Many years ago there was a place, I think the name was smart part or sort of, officially selling Fender stuff but I don't know if it still exists.
Thank you.

Are they even real decals? I would have figured Squier uses a gel or silkscreen.

Fender decals tend to be available from time to time on eBay/Google but I've never seen someone bother with a Squier logo; might be possible to commission one?

I'm also looking for a VM (Jag) decal. They're out there. I've seen people do it here... but mainly custom made I guess.

I hope someone here is willing to send the template at least :D

Dunno, Danley.
I haven't sanded it yet. Anyways it's no a major issue, if I can find an original one ok, otherwise I'll only refinish the body.
Alien, the problem with "spare" decals is the gold or silver ink. The originals have that kind of ink, you cannot replicate it with a normal printer.

You could try one of those gold paint markers over the printed decal if you really wanted to try I suppose.

Honestly, I think the easiest thing to do is go with a Fender decal. I actually like the Squier one and would use that if available, but since it's not easy to come by, Fender is the path of least resistance. You'll be keeping the back of the headstock unchanged, right? If so, it shouldn't be particularly misleading with that text on the back if you sell it down the road.

I never noticed the golden or silver ink... Doesn't really make difference to me but the paint marker idea sounds good

Also, I think a matching headstock with a Squier decal makes it even more unique. I'm all for it

Forumite HNB made my white waterslide for me.
He had offered to make it using silver or gold ink and the ones I've seen (that he did) look pretty darn good.

That's fantastic, Parry. It'll be my next Squier.
Yep, Alien. Decals have always been in metallic colour, gold and silver. The paint marker it's not good at all. You cannot be perfectly precise inside the contour, and there will be a very fine raised layer.
In the meantime I tried to write Fender to see what they say. As I wrote, it's not big deal. I can strip and paint the headstock another time.

I did a quick search and found this site:
https://luthierdecals.com/index.php/squier-decals
You can see they use goldfoil instead of the gold ink and they look rather good. Might worth shouting a mail out and ask if they custom made something for you.

Thanks alot Amon. I had an email from Fender saying they'll check my request. If they cannot fulfill my request, I'll try these ones.
Great.

Since you're refinishing anyway, another option is a completely unique waterslide.

I ordered a 'Jazzblaster' decal from Rothko & Frost, it arrived in about a week (UK to US), looks great.

Wooderson, I prefer to keep things as much original as possible. But that's nice, a long time ago I was designing a personalized decal with Fender fonts.
Meanwhile the work proceeds.

Fender has replied, as I imagined. They don't supply decals out of the warranty service. It means Or you have a lifetime warranty on any of their product, OR if you buy something second hand, as I did, you're done.
Anyways I already knew they have a quite crappy customer service. That's why it's plenty of fakes out there.
So, I'll go for something else.
