Yep, it’s a retrofit :'(

I’ll convert back to a leather one. There will be a little evidence of the later handle, but oh well. I will get over that because it sounds fantastic! I really like these Princeton’s. It’s like every guitar keeps it’s in personality when running into them. I’ve had other amps where every guitar sounds almost the same. With my Travis Bean, the brown one sounds like a miniature Marshall when dimed. The Lovetone Brown Source works exceedingly well with this amp! Of course the old standby Zvex SHO does it’s job admirably, too. I’m happy that I decided to finally get one of these!!

Thats a handsome pair. The brown one is in particularly good shape. Just right, imo. Did you say original speaker in the 6G2?

I love these amps so much. They're true to individual guitars and effects and record so beautifully.

If you go repro handle I got one from this dude. http://www.brookwoodleather.com/amp_handles

Its not going to be a 100% 1:1 repro but the quality exceeds even the original. Patina was perfect and it was a little thicker too from what I remember.

Yeah, just enough wear to not be afraid to use it :)

I am not too sure what speaker it has. I haven't had a chance to look at it too closely yet. I'll be honest and say that I don't know much about which speakers Fender was using when, etc.

Thats the right style and size speaker for your amp but that actually an Oxford from a later 60's / early 70s Fender most likely. That looks similar-ish to the original blown speaker for my '72 PR. It probably sounds pretty damn good, maybe not tight in the bass but thats perfectly fine in a 6G2.

Cool, thanks for the info 8)

I does sound really nice in it! It seems like all frequencies are accounted for in a way that will be real useable for me. I've never been too concerned with speaker originality in my amps.. as long as they sound good! As a matter of fact, my Bassman, Bandmaster, and now both Princetons all have replaced ones :D Speaking of the other Princeton's speaker.. UPS fucked up and rerouted my incoming P10R the opposite direction or I would've had it yesterday. I think it should be here tomorrow. I am anxious to see how I like it in the AA964. If the Weber that I have wasn't 50w, I think I would like it a lot better. I just feel like it's just a bit too stiff for this amp.

Damn, that looks beautiful! I'm so glad you have both of those! Now, plug into the Reverb tank and play through both. You'll be VERY happy about that.

8)

I've been absolutely loving mine since I got mine back from the tech. I'm starting to really notice all of the little details and changes. It's just such a fantastic amp.

Man, all of these Princetons are gorgeous. I've been avoiding buying a vintage amp because of all the maintenance they might need, but this thread might just destroy that notion...

Agh, I thought I'd put my apartment-sized amp GAS to bed with the '64 Vox AC4 I just scooped up, but this is reminding me of the 6G2-shaped hole in my life. Congrats on a beautiful pair of amps!

Thanks!!

I am really glad that yours turned out so well! There is nothing like a well tuned, '60s Fender 8) This 6G2 sounds really nice as is and I am pretty sure I can make it even better with a little work. Sorting out the old cap job is #1. I have all the caps on hand including the proper can. While I am in there, I want to test everything else for drift and I'll replace whatever needs it (with proper parts of course.. carbon comp resistors FTW!). After that, I'll grab a pair of good NOS output tubes. Probably GE. I already found a correct width handmade leather handle and a pair of original handle brackets.

You are right about them both pairing great with one another! The old Reverb tank is the icing on the cake :-* I would LOVE to get another one some day... a brown one with wheat grille and the flat logo. How cool would it be to have two mini stacks of Princetons... The 6G2 with a brown reverb on top and the '66 with a blackface reverb?? :? I know it's absurd!
