Yeah, I'm hoping I dig the pickup. The original sounds good, but it's a bit too midrange/nasally, metallicy, and hot. Into a cranked Marshall, it probably rocks, but I play clean 95% of the time, so I need something that compliments that. I'll keep the original in any case.

The Surf 90 arrived yesterday and I installed it this morning and low and behold... It sounds nearly identical to the pickup that it replaced. I guess some guitars just have a sound to them... The only difference with the pickups is that it is not microphonic like the original, but it seems to have a grounding issue that I can't quite trace. It's not exactly a difficult guitar to wire up, so it's weird that it'd have a grounding issue, but alas... When I touch the metal pickup cover, it buzzes... Almost like a reverse grounding issue? Somewhere, somehow, the pickup has become electronically hot. I'll try switching the pickup leads and see what happens.
Sounds good, anyhow, if not a bit quacky for my liking. But it'll do for now. The guitar plays amazing, in any case.

Sounds like a grounding issue. The noise and quacky-ness are the biggest clues. Check the cover grounding or lack thereof.
Interesting it sounds near identical. I bet getting the noise / grounded sorted will change things. Could also be an issue somewhere else in the harness...

You could also just stick an active EMG in there! (This comment, I feel, is 100% not ironic given the guitar.)
You may just need to go hotter until peels paint and literal faces melt.

It's weird, though! It's a single coil pickup, isn't it? I don't even know what it would be out of phase with.
There's 5 wires and somehow I messed it up.

Thats how it goes sometimes!
Could be just reversed? I'd still trace your ground path. DO GFS have wiring diagrams?

Going to! I wired it up at 5:30 am. It's totally a possibility I miffed it up (or that these Chinese made pickups are wonky with the lead colours...)
But hey, it's my birthday so I'm right regardless!

I switched the leads coming from the pickup and sure enough, they were reversed. One would thing "black" is "ground" but hey... All good now. Sounds good.
