That looks a bit drastic. I make my neck pockets at 5/8" deep all the way but that's not with a
TOM or anything of the sort. How deep is that at the deepest point? You may not want to go full flat with that. Your luthier should be able to advise on that.

I can't offer much of an opinion on the neck pocket situation (except to agree that the neck heel does look a little high) but this looks like a fantastic project. Good choice of bits & pieces?
Are you going for matching pickup covers & guard or are you going for that two-tone white & cream look?

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

I feel like any luthier could help you with this. I was assembling a parts guitar and ran into a problem. Luthier has to route the neck pocket, no problem.

Cool project. Are you planning to route to inset the trem? BilT got around the flat plate on arch top issue with the Volare that way. I like the idea of the Mastery vibrato too, as that more closely references the shape of the original vibrato units. Chromed JM covers might be worth considering as well for the same reason, but then there’s no reason not to lean more toward the JM influences as well. Looks like it could be a really fun and unique guitar.

Re: the neck pocket—the originals definitely have a flatter angle, but I’ve had to shim mine quite a bit to get the action and pickup clearance right. With the greater adjustable height range of the JM pickups that may be less of an issue.

Thanks for the encouragement! You guys are the best kind of terrible enablers
We share an affinity for those. That would be my number 1 choice - BUT - a) $$$ (yiikes!); and 2) I have an AVRI trem already, and the rest of this thing is oddball Fendnerd parts, so...
I thought so, too. I'm definitely going to get it looked at/worked on. Let me grab some measurements later tonight - should consider this in the future.
My dude.

Thanks! I WAS going to route a window (think singlecoil in a humbucker format) in to a black JM pickup cover, leaving the grey flatwork exposed, but as it turns out, Peter was out of grey flatwork, so he wound it on black. Wonk, wonk.... so it looks like i'm going with the black/cream look.PorkyPrimeCut wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 9:43 pmI can't offer much of an opinion on the neck pocket situation (except to agree that the neck heel does look a little high) but this looks like a fantastic project. I think there's enough flat area, that I might not have to? But that is plan B. Thanks for the thoughts - I've been scheming this one for a while. I think it should work out beautifully.Gavanti wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2019 5:43 amCool project. Are you planning to route to inset the trem? Re: Coronado "Modded" Player with JM pups and trem
Maybe this is way out of line, but have you considered putting a Bigsby and a more archtop-conventional bridge? this would avoid the neck pocket rework, and put the strings more or less where they were when the guitar body came off the factory floor. Like a B7 or a B3 Bigsby...

Re: Coronado "Modded" Player with JM pups and trem
Great guitar, I've been looking for one, thinking about doing the same kind of work.parry wrote: ↑Fri Jul 05, 2019 9:16 amThanks! I sure hope it turns out. I've been dreaming of this for a while now. I have a couple of options for the routing work - I want to make sure it gets done right. One thing I noticed, is that Fender routed a huuuuuge angle in to the neck pocket. No doubt, trying to emulate other set-neck hollow/semi-hollows and to compensate for break-angle and whatnot...
I seem to be under the impression that vintage Coros had a neck pocket similar to a standard Jazzmaster route. I'm thinking about getting this one somewhat flattened out. When I was mocking it up last night, it seemed REALLY steep. The neck ramps right out of the body, which sets the pickups quite high (the bridge, especially), as well as the bridge itself. Aesthetically, I'm not a huge fan of that thought - nor, do I think it'll really need that. I don't think it'll ever be strung with anything lower than 12s, so it should be fine...?
Hivemind? Thoughts on the neck pocket thing?
The neck pocket angle is necessary for the bridge, tailpiece, and arched top design, and it was done correctly, IMHO, given the original pickups (Fidelitrons). Since you're going in a new direction with pickups and bridge, then it might be worth while to bring it down a degree, especially since the Floating Trem with your bridge of choice has a sweet spot in terms of break angle. I personally would leave it, and just go with a different bridge design, Mastery being my first thought, but a floating or slot-pinned bar bridge with a Tru-Arc would be even better. Then I'd probably just slap a Bigsby B3 on it too. Sub'd, looking forward to seeing this
