Silvertone/Talman Mashup (finished)
Working on another talman/spare parts build. This one is going to be Silvertone/danelectro style, since I have a ton of left over 3/4 ply from replacing the subfloor in my entry way. I haven't decided on most of the details yet. I'm pretty much just winging it.

Re: Silvertone/Talman Mashup
I've fallen behind on posting photos, but this scrap wood is starting to look like something other than scrap wood. Not a guitar yet, but something guitar adjacent?
Still making decisions about color, bridge, and pickups. the only decision I've made is that its gonna be weird. I am leaning towards a flake or metallic finish, but i don't want to buy a spray gun. I am open to any suggestions. Does anyone make a rattle can neon green metallic?
I have a free neck, that had a chunk taken out of the head stock. I'll be figuring out how to patch that soon. Likely a painted headstock situation. I've sanded off the acrylic finish, and will probably do wipe on poly or an oil finish.
I'm leaning towards a single pickup, with no volume or tone. I want something weird. No strat pickups or humbuckers, but i don't want to spend a shit ton of money on this guy. My over all goal is to have something that looks like it could have been a one off Japanese guitar from the mid 60's.
You can see that I used a ton of filler here.
The next few weeks are going to be full of sanding.

Re: Silvertone/Talman Mashup
I fully endorse what you're doing here. Lipsticks or gold foils would be a natural choice for this project.
I used Krylon Glitter Blast for my plywood semi-hollow Talman. They don't have a neon green per se, but they do have a citrus green that could be nice

This is a cool project. I'd also suggest you look at the GFS pickups. You can get a Surf-90 for about $35.

Re: Silvertone/Talman Mashup
taking a minute away from the body until i can get a template and template bit to do the neck pocket.
I started working on this neck that i got for free from the elementary school my brother works at. It seems one of the future world leaders broke a chunk off the headstock, and somewhere along the line one of the tuner bushings got lost, and the nut got broken into 5 pieces. Here is the before picture that i took while trying to decide on a repair shape
after this photo, i decided to sand off all of the acrylic finish, and start from raw. i thought about doing a tele shape, or mimicking a teisco shape, but in the end i decided to take the upright citizen's brigade approach and don't think.
so in the mindset of fucking winging it, i hacked a chunk off the broken part, and glued on a huge hunk of maple that i found at home depot. I literally can not stress enough how little i was thinking here.
check it out, the grain patterns and coloring aren't even close. I'm starting to think that this neck isn't even maple...
I just put my pen on the wood and somehow a cool shape came out. Nailed it.
is anyone else seeing how much I'm crushing it right now?
gratuitous mock up shot, with chunks of scrap wood representing guitar parts.
The neck has about 5 coats of danish oil on it now, and the patch is starting to blend a little more. Now i need to start picking out hardware and spending money on this thing.

That thing definitely needed some help. That is a cool headstock shape.

Re: Silvertone/Talman Mashup
I have three options for the bridge ranging from $10 to $30
Thoughts? Opinions?

I liked where it's headed with the not-thinking-about-it too much. You should just keep going with that on all the decisions for this build, including which bridge. My knee-jerk pick is #3.

Re: Silvertone/Talman Mashup
You're right, i knew what i wanted, but I realized i was just being cheap.
Here's a neck template that i made out of an old sheet of acrylic.
I did a first pass at 1/2 an inch, so i can measure the final depth later. Here it is next to my first talman build from a few years ago. Back then i didn't have a fancy full scale PDF to work from, so i had to just wing it even more.
with the process on hold until my bridge showed up, i decided to put down a layer of primer, and then sand halfway to forever, which means I'm only half done sanding.
Now it was about that time that i realized i was planning things again. to throw a wrench into everything I found a record that I got for free from the library at the school i work at. The sleeve was for a blues compilation, but the record inside was gospel, folk, and cajun. Fuck that. You are getting turned into a pickguard.
hey, my bridge showed up. Its starting to look like a guitar.

I love this! White with the black and red vinyl pickguard just screams 1960's/rock and roll. Definitely watching this one.
