NGD! 1962 Jazzmaster [Now in Burgundy Mist! p.2]

Post by gishuk » Mon Oct 07, 2019 8:43 am

I spotted this on Reverb and happened to have some money floating around so I picked it up. Its an early 1962 so still has a slab board neck, but had been modified for 9 strings in the past  so the headstock has had the extra holes filled and been veneered and the nut has some repairs around it, which made the price very inviting. It looks like whoever did it did a good job so thats not an issue to me.
The whole guitar including the neck has been refinished in poly though, it looks like a professionally done job, and done some time ago by the wear and yellowing of the clear. However I'm very much thinking about sending it to Rexter sometime in the future and having it refinished in nitro in a custom colour appropriate for 1962, but that would be next year.
Everything else is original according to the seller and I don't see any reason to doubt that, all looks correct to me.
The main thing is that it sounds and plays fantastically! Really great tone and it feels so alive, despite the poly finish, you can feel it vibrating, its very impressive.
I may get a staytrem bridge though as I don't like the stock saddles, I have a mastery on my other JM but fancy trying staytrem this time.

Excuse the phone photos in not the best light. The other guitar is my 1961/62 partscaster which I've had for about 10 years now and could do with a refret!

wow! great find! :-* I wouldn't worry much about the mentioned repairs. All seems to be restored very well.
I wonder what the weight is!?

It weighs very much similar to my other one, but as I dont know the weight of that either that isn't very helpful :D

One slightly odd thing I've found is the volume pot appears to have its entire range from about 6-10, anything lower than that is basically 'off'. But it seems to have a full range of sound just in a very compressed amount of travel on the pot  Not sure what thats all about.

That's a fine rack full of guitars there.

On the volume, it could be a few reasons

1) the pot it linear. Audio pots approximate a log scale which is how we hear. So a log pot should give a more even increase.

2) the taper of the audio pot sucks. I have an audio pot in mine that I just wired up and it's similar to your experience.

I recently bought emerson pro cts pots which should have a better taper.

Once I rewire I can let you know how it sounds.

That would be helpful thank you. Its not a huge issue but even though its the original electronics I'm not averse to replacing it if necessary.

That looks great.

I think the 8-string mode gives our European Jazzmasters an extra layer of history. I had mine veneered and resprayed by Clive Brown.

Your Jazzmaster is awesome, that veneer work to restore the headstock is incredible too.

The 9 string thing is kinda weird for sure but youre right it totally tells a story.

Oh
My
GOD

the tort on that maroon Jazzmaster is like the prettiest I’ve ever seen it’s just amazing! And the new guy looks really good too, like I see no evidence of there ever being extra tuners so it looks like whoever fixed it did a great job.

Awesome, awesome guitars there man.

Thanks! As a fellow tort lover I've seen a lot of vintage tort too and still nothing has come close to this one. I was lucky to find it, and it was very cheap too.

i’ve thought pretty hard about the whole 9 string offset thing... such an interesting mod, and makes sense with the way the bridge is designed. great bit of history there.. such a beautiful piece!
