I wonder if any of the currently produced guitars come close in process to these old competition Mustangs? Because they were most definitely finished in some sort of poly but aged like guitars that definitely weren’t finished in poly.
Likely polyurethane finish, as it is easier to wear out, while polyester is like a thick layer of plastic where even sanding with a palm sander is a pain in the butt.

Most likely, these old guitars were subject to the materials and the atmospheric settings of their time. Quality and newer options surely improve over time in at least some things, these paints they use today being one of them. Of course though, UV light and regular play will do something to the finish. It's always going to be a factor, but the new paint is designed to hold up better.

Yeah I’ve always liked how that logo looked in shape and in that white/gold color. Really does it for me.

Truly spectacularly well put together.

I can't put the thing down! Every chance I get I'm playing it.

Update:

The date codes on the potentiometers read 304-7008

It's likely to be a late Feb '70 part. I've yet to remove the neck, but on that I think maybe we can close the book.

AMAZING. My dream guitar. I've played plenty of blue ones, but haven't the luck to own one. I have a red and a modern turquoise, but not a vintage blue.

Enjoy in good health, brother!
