Dead bodies? Routing gone mad

Anyone else dealt with lifting a pick guard (especially a large one covering a large percentage of the body) and finding that the previous owner has gone mad with a router?
If it was just going to be a ‘wall hanger’, has anyone got any experience of filling large areas with filler?

The easiest thing is to clean up the missing sections and glue in wood so the screws have something to bite into properly.

If the nature of the locations works for this, you could even just drill and glue in a dowel cut to length at the location you need the screw to bite into. Much much better than wood filler.

I have this Tele that a previous owner had chipped out the bridge pickup area to mount a huge pickup at an angle or something with a screwdriver. It was a mess and not covered by any pickguard. So I routed out and inlaid walnut and maple strips then cut it for standard pickups. If you have a big area to repair, that may be a solution for you.

If all the damage is hidden by the pickguard and the parts mount solidly around it then leave it and you have a semi-hollow body guitar.

Router abuse is much better than finding the prior owner had gone crazy with a dull chisel.

Then YOU'd have to go crazy with the router before gluing in well-fitted replacement wood (which is the only proper way to do repair--not filler)

How to deal with it depends entirely on what it is and what the routing looks like imo

That's what happened to Guild S-60. The back was routed. Of course the house fire didn't help either.

Don't worry. It has a place of honour now. Before it was just a damaged unplayable guitar.
