Sleazing up my Mustang?
One of my favourite guitars is my Frankenstein mustang which currently is black with a black guard and white plastic. Like the David Gilmour stratocaster but with a rosewood fretboard.
I've had to take it apart because after 7 years or so it's having some action problems, and I'm taking the opportunity to replace one of the pickups that I never really got on with. Then I started thinking, what if I replaced the pick guard too? The one it has now is fine, but I think the black on black might be a bit plain.
So I've mocked this up as an idea, the 'big cat' tort is animal print in the mockup but I was envisioning something more like this:
Would it be kitschy cool, or scary spice crazy?

Re: Sleazing up my Mustang?
You do you. I've never been into the funky torts but black is far and away the best colour to stick Big Cat/Prince tort on.
When I was soliciting pickguard opinions for my Mustang, someone suggested a black body with gold comp stripe and gold guard.
A gold guard would totally look amazing on a black Mustang but I never considered it before. Just recycling the idea and mentioning it here.

If someone wants to go wild with unusual pickguards, there is an entire universe of awesome/stoopid stuff.

I like how sleazy became a verb. Those are all cool options.

Re: Sleazing up my Mustang?
These are some good options thank you for the suggestions, Black and gold is interesting, it's not something I'd ever really considered before.
Snakeskin is tempting, but I fear it may be a step too far and lead down a path that ends in rhinestones
I've ordered a sample of some big cart tort to get a feel for it, I might stick with the other changes I had for now and put this aside as a potential future project.

Re: Sleazing up my Mustang?
My shop built a quick and dirty "Star" bass for a local Bootsy Collins tribute act. Lemme tell ya, it actually takes a LOT of time to cover a thick outline of fake rhinestones onto a bass body. I developed a method where I had a pencil with some double sided tape on the eraser end. I'd tap the top of a plastic jewel, put a drop of superglue on the bottom, then plop the jewel down on the bass and roll the taped pencil off it after the glue set. One at a time, over and over... Hopefully it will be a long time before I have to bedazzle another guitar.

I think I must have made it just before it stopped working, just checked my old link for it and get nothing now.
