Ready to get semi-permanent? (Velcro talk)

The only times I've ever made boards (homemade wood boards) I've screwed the pedals directly to the board, but I'm also not a touring musician, so take that with a grain of salt. I remember a That Pedal Show video where Dan mentioned that he uses a combination of Velcro and Dual Lock (Velcro on the board side, Dual Lock on the pedal side (in small squares as mentioned above)), and it's supposed to be very sturdy, but not impossible to remove either. In theory, it would also be a bit less expensive, as you'd only need half the Dual Lock. Also, there are different (i.e. better) grades of Velcro too!!

I use Dual Lock. The pedals snap into place and stay put. Pull one side of the pedal up and it disengages. I don't see the grip strength diminish with repeated removal. You need really good finger grip to pull it off a pedal or pedal board, but it doesn't leave residue like velcro does. It also doesn't take very much Dual Lock to secure a pedal. I use small squares.

Thanks all! I did a combo of a few things for ease of use -

- Left the original soft/fuzzy side of velcro on my board, added a little bit to cover top to bottom coverage
- Put painters tape on the base of my Shure Receiver
- Put three strips and two circle/dots of the 3M Dual Lock onto the painters tape
- Stuck that sucker onto the board.

SOLID!!!

I should have taken a picture but I just stuck it to the board, I'm letting the tape set.

Fantastic! I trust Dan and Mick (That Pedal Show), but I'm not someone who professionally builds boards either, so this is encouraging. I'm still working on my next board/pedal setup, and I'm glad that this works, as I'll be able to save a little money too

I will say I didn't redo my whole board, just the Shure receiver, the other pedals I don't have a problem with so I'll work on those over time. I ordered a bag of 10 1"x2" strips and a bag of 10 1" round dots, instead of a whole roll (which in the long run likely would have been cheaper to do). My board is relatively small - 8-9 pedals usually.

I use 3M Dual Lock - really great stuff. I bought it based on recommendations from Dan from That Pedal Show. Prior to this and other pedal board educational tips, I was using a Boss pedalboard and daisy-chained my pedals.

I'm a big fan of the Warwick Rockboard boards. I have a CINQUE 5.2 as my primary home board, two QUAD 4.2s for my secondary/travel board and backup board, and a TRES 3.2 for my bass pedals.

My board setup is probably needlessly complex at this point but I run a Pedal Snake and my power supply for my pedals is in the back of my amp. The snake runs power and audio on multiple channels.

It made slightly more sense when I had a separate wireless receiver that also needed DC adapter power, so I would mount all that at the amp. Once I upgraded to the Shure, which runs off 9v power just like a normal pedal, it reduced the need for the snake some.

With the config as-is, I only need one outlet near the amp to power everything. In some of the smaller/weirder clubs there are sometimes no outlets near front of stage and the snake helps me consolidate all the power needs to one location.

It also gives me some flexibility to swap out power supplies and pedal boards because the power is always at the amp rather than on the board.

As an update, I haven't had any further problems since I attached the wireless receiver using dual-lock, even in the brutal Texas heat that we've had recently. I still haven't pulled the rest of the pedals off, but not having a problem with them currently I'll leave them alone for now.

necro bumping this thread to add a further endorsement of Dual Lock.

I ordered 1m of the midrange stuff to tidy up a few bits in my studio. Originally was disappointed because it was only 1m one-sided, so 50cm in reality.

One speculative use I had was to keep a midi keyboard controller in place on a sliding shelf under my desk. I'd always wished this sat a bit prouder off the edge of the shelf, and had wondered if loads and loads of velcro might do it. I was pretty certain that the meagre amount of Dual Lock I had definitely wouldn't do it.

It absolutely did.

The first photo shows the 2.5" bit of dual lock I set at the back of either side of the keyboard, the second photo shows how proud from the edge of the shelf the keyboard now sits. To illustrate how far forward that is, that's past the point that the keyboard would just tip off the shelf if the Dual Lock isn't there. It feels solid as anything. It's not coming off. And that's just 2.5" (maybe 3"?) on either side.

I'm mostly posting here because I'm somewhat incredulous at how solid this is.

Now I'm wondering what else I can stick to what else....
