Gold anodized guard arrived today... Partsmaster project ahead!

Post by Soiouz » Mon Dec 18, 2006 11:14 am

There's been lots of talk here lately about gold guards, and sources to get them...

Well I just received the one (with extras) i snagged on Ebay a couple of weeks ago and I am very, very happy with it... I thought it would be a Japan repro from the pics in the auction but it's not!  It's a 13-hole guard but with the thickness of the vintage ones and graining that looks much better than the MIJ ones too....

I didn't bother to ask before as I was so sure it was a Japanese repro, but now I mailed the seller to ask him where he got it!.. Home-made? Vintique? Scotland? I don't know!

Those things are hard to photograph, so the photos won't do justice, but here it goes:

The extras that came with it are great too: 1959 and 1960 pots, switches, wiring and jack and 1961 knobs, pickup covers and... screws!

With this, some leftover electronics and the blonde CIJ body I recently bought, I think I just got myself a nice winter project!

Great Score! You must have snagged it while I was away, I don't remember seeing that one.

Great extras too!  Was it a good price?

I just paid $300 alone for the pots, wiring and switches from a '59.    :-X  :-[

Well..... I paid 210$ shipping included for the whole package!!  I guess that was a pretty good price!  8)

Yeah, it's while you were gone and I was quick to hit BIN...  Here's the thread in which we discussed it.. there's the link to the auction inside.

Well, lets see. I did some math based on going prices for those parts individually, and you more or less got the guard for free (if not been paid for taking it).

It's beyond a good deal! Great BIN!

I'm a happy man!

Here's how the guard looks once installed (temporarily) on my CIJ:

I won't use the other parts until I really get the project started.

It looks great! I can't wait to see it on the blonde body when it is all finished up. Do you have any photos of that body? I haven't seen many of the newer ones in blonde. Have you decided what kind of neck you are going to use?

Me too!!  ;)

I haven't received the body yet.. Still a couple of days I guess, but as soon as I get it, I'll post pics.

As for the neck, I am still wondering which way to go.. $trat neck? Aftermarket?    I don't know yet.. But I'm not in a hurry.

The idea is basically to get a great player's guitar without spending thousands!

Any advice will be appreciated!

I'd suggest the MusicKraft necks...they have the correct headstock + they have clay dots!

it'll look REALLY authentic!

I'm actually watching one of those on the Bay right now...  I was wondering if any of you knew how good they are?

Yeah, I've heard good things about those necks also. I used one of the Allparts LRO necks on my Jazzblaster and I'm super happy with it. I finished it in real thin lacquer, used a preslotted Tusq nut, and slightly reshaped the headstock. It looks just like it should and feels great.

Jay has one on his Jazzblaster project. As far as I know, he's happy with it.

I was watching that one on ebay too, but I lost interest after shelling out for the '59 today. It ends in just a few hours....
