The first half of my gold guard project is almost complete

Post by i love sharin foo » Wed Jan 31, 2007 1:57 pm

The body I am using is an alder Allparts piece. It is a really nice body except that there is a fair bit of routing needed to use off the shelf parts. The rhythm cavity wasn't deep enough and the bridge pickup cavity needs moved around a quarter inch toward the bridge. I have an original '60s bridge and tremolo for it, also pickup covers and screws. The bridge thimbles are the later shorter type. I have a '66 neck pickup for it and the entire rhythm circuit is also '66. I used CTS pots, a Switchcraft jack and toggle switch. The guard is one of the ones GPR is selling. I have a layer of white primer under the black lacquer finish. I still need to wet sand it and shoot a couple more coats of color before I clear it. After that, I'll rub it out and finish it up. I still haven't decided on a neck for it. Overall, I'm definitely not going for a true '58/59 clone... I just want a similar aesthetic. So far, I'm real happy with the way it's turning out.

Thanks guys!

I can't wait for it to be all finished up. I have always loved gold guards (like everyone else... big surprise :P ), so this has been a color combo I've had kicking around in my head for a long time. It might have just one pickup for a while until I can afford the second. I spent the budget I had for both pickups on just one, so the second will have to come after the neck  :D.

Also, I'll have to try to get a couple good shots of my custom aged knobs  ;D  It took a while, but they match up fairly well with the originals on my other Jazzmasters. It just looked wrong to have the new cream knobs next to the original pickup covers that it has. Maybe I'm nuts, but it does look better this way :)

Not crazy at all and I'd love to see it!  I tried and failed miserably to age a set.  Just couldn't get a look I liked.
