Sorry I meant 1981... No white JM after 1981... So, if he still had one I wouldn't have shown it in the last 26 years.Fall reverb wrote:Ahahah, would it be possible to post pics showing Smith with his white Jazzmaster in 1982? I would be quite interested in seeing these...Ahahah wrote: I could be wrong, but having collected a (almost) full database of the stuff The Cure used on stage, I have never seen a white Jazzmaster after 1982... God, that's 25 years...
Thanks in advance!

No problem, Ahahah...so am I correct in assuming that Smith probably made his last public appearance with a white Jazzmaster during The Cure's 'Eight Appearances'-tour in late November/early December 1981, and would you happen to have pics taken during this tour by any chance?
The 'Pictures Of You'-website does not seem to have photos taken during this tour, so I would be quite interested to see some pics...

Re: Roberts Smiths Fish guitar
SO we have a Kiwi on board.
Welcome. I'm assuming you're from NZ as I recognize the Haka under your name...
I have relatives in Wellington & have had the pleasure of visiting your beautiful country twice now. Road-tripping round the South Island was probably my greatest travel experience ever!!

Funny, you're not the first one to ask the question... Some clues are misleading.
I'm not from New Zealand, nor I am Maori or Tahitian or anyone else living in Oceania...
I happen to love watching rugby... hence the haka.
Don't make me say what I haven't said : I'm pretty sure it's nicer to live there than where I do.
Cheers to your relatives in Wellington by the way.

The last pictures showing the white Jazzmaster I know have been taken on 19/10/1981 @ L'Olympia, Paris.Fall reverb wrote: No problem, Ahahah...so am I correct in assuming that Smith probably made his last public appearance with a white Jazzmaster during The Cure's 'Eight Appearances'-tour in late November/early December 1981, and would you happen to have pics taken during this tour by any chance?

I travelled to NZ the first time on the same plane as the entire Canterbury (NZ) rugby team. All of them fucking massive maori's. The drank gallons of booze for the first half of the journey (12 hours or so), singing their hearts out. Then they all slept like babies for the rest of the journey. Really sound guys!!
When we had landed in LAX we had a 2 hour wait. They took full advantage of the excellent waiting room facilites & mobbed the showers. There's something slightly un-nerving about taking a piss when there's 15 or so huge maori's walking around in nothing but very small towels. One for the ladies perhaps!!

Yep, I've seen these as well, however I'm fairly sure that the still-white Jazzmaster was also used during the 'Eight Appearances'-tour, and it looks like Smith had the guitar(s) refinished sometime between Dec. '81 and April '82 - here's a pic taken in Bourges, France on April 10th 1982, which is as far as I know one of the earliest appearances of Smith with a black JM -Ahahah wrote: The last pictures showing the white Jazzmaster I know have been taken on 19/10/1981 @ L'Olympia, Paris.

And here is the same guitar shot in Paris, on 11/04/1982 @ the Studio Davout, Paris.

For sure, and one definitely has to tip his hat for the excellent work that's being done on that website...Ahahah wrote: Good sources, Sir
P.S. - have you noticed the pic that is now featured on www.foreverdrowning.net's startpage?
It could be that my eyes are deceiving me, but it looks like Smith is playing an Electric XII with a maple fretboard here!?
P.P.S. - also courtesy of YouTube - here's the only footage I've ever seen featuring Michael Dempsey as well as Robert Smith's first Jazzmaster before it was modified -

Re: Roberts Smiths Fish guitar
The rehearsing sessions for the demos of "Pornography" were not recorded with a Jazzmaster but with an Ovation Breadwinner instead (the one he used from 1979 onwards with Siouxsie & the Banshees). Some demos were shots by a French TV @ the Pippbrook Mill Studios in Dorking in december 1981. It confirms that the Jazzmaster was not available by that time.Fall reverb wrote: it looks like Smith had the guitar(s) refinished sometime between Dec. '81 and April '82
Being the proud owner of an Ovation Breadwinner, I have always doubted about "Pornography" being recorded with a Jazzmaster. This might sound as heresy :D
And here is the proof : The Figurehead @ the Pippbrook Mill Studios, december 1981 : http://youtube.com/watch?v=zQEV7hRj73s
One of Smith's 2 white Bass VI is visible, but certainly no Jazzmaster around. Ok, some may argue that it's a playback, but the sound of the Ovation is around...

You don't need glasses : Smith's E. XII is a maple neck. Rather strange one, because the black dots of the fretboard are rather wide.Fall reverb wrote:
