Check out my Marshall "Artiste" combo - clips
I played some guitars for an artist yesterday. It was a "modern rock" tune so I fired up the old Marshall.. This amp was called the "Artiste" and is mentioned in the Marshall book as their biggest mistake ever.
Mine's a '72 and I've always LOVED this amp.. I think it delivers pretty classic Marshall tones
Here's my goldtop plugged straight in.. NO eq - NO compression - NO pedals.. Just the amp turned up to about 7
the verse gtrs have some fx added via Soundtoys plug-ins.. But except for the drums , bass, and vocals - every other sound is the goldtop / marshall combination
whatdya think ??

just turn it up to 6 or 7 - hit an A chord - and you're a rock star !!

Sounds like a Marshall to me - why did they say it was such a mistake? IMHO Marshall started making mistakes consistently right after the JCM900...

You know, I've always felt that way with my Tremolux. Sadly I don't get it to 6/7 very often. There's nothing like an amp's sweet spot.Danocaster wrote:it's got THAT sound...secndshft wrote:And that amp.

sounds great!
now with 900's ive owned 2, the clean sounds on them suck!!!!! shared eq, sux! dependability and functionality are great. toured with them for 2 years tried every trick in the book to get good clean sounds but ended up buying an single channel 50 watt 800 and all my problems went away! i play right on the verge of breakup for clean and the 900 just didnt do that well.

Yeah, they are good. I've played some later ones which weren't great, though...

Re: Check out my Marshall "Artiste" combo - clips
The guitar player in my last band used a 900 with my Les Paul most of the time—no pedals just amp drive. It sounded shit on its own but once you put in the mix with my guitar, live or recorded, it worked very well. This Artist combo sounds good obviously but I can't stand this song. Still, Dano could play through a Pignose and it would sound fantastic. Good players know how to make just about anything sound cool.

I get it.. he wasn't even gonna have me play on this track because he knew it wasn't "my style". But that's what made it particularly fun for me - it's just something I never play.. He calls me for all his ambient / alt-pop indie stuff - and his slick RnB "pop" stuff.. we did another track the same day and he was referencing a "mellower"Jason Mraz.Jay wrote:This Artist combo sounds good obviously but I can't stand this song.
That's part of the fun of doing sessions - ya never know what you're gonna have to pull out yer back pocket. One tune may be Sade , the next Thrice , and then a dance tune.. You gotta be able to at least "fake" anything
