Re: Yamaha SG-3 & SG-2 replica project builds - frets & spra
i read that of all cans of metallic i have use (mostly autocan) if they were not clear coated rapidely the particles beguin to oxyde and tarnish
that s why i have clearcoat my metallic in the few hours after they are spray ,but i haven't try to not clearcoat them immediatly .
maybe there is a window more long but metallic can't be sand , then if you re not clearcoat them fast you can have bugs on ect .... during the drying;
and where it is difficult metallic doesn't like wet clearcoat on them cause it disturb the metallic particle
when you clearcoat them and they are not totally dry, only do light pass no big charge cause the effect will be change and metallic effect is lost

The nitro IBM I have has aluminum in it, says so right on the can.

Cool, thanks for the tip, Ludo (& Paul). My cans have no info whatsoever. I couldn't see any big change this morning, but I've just given it another dusting and will clear-coat after my breakfast!

Teasing indeed!
But...I managed to get three mist coats of clear on today so all is good.

I was going to have just three jag pickups with stock covers and claws, but I'm now leaning towards using Shapeways to make some more accurate covers like this:
The way I've designed these means the claws are still there but they slot inside the covers. Peter pickup wizard has wound me a set of three Jag pickups - Bridge and RWRP middle in Alnico3 (to be wired as a variable humbucker), RWRP neck in Alnico5. Amazingly, I got them for what I thought I would pay for just two. Wizard indeed!
any way I could order a set of these off your specs and files? Who is Shapeways?
Thanks!

They're still at the experimental stage - waiting for delivery now so I can check fit and suitability of the material.FIREBOT wrote:

Have been on holiday for a week so I couldn't get as much of the spraying done as I'd wanted. Back into the routine of three coats a day now, following a bit of touching-up after the gun spat a chunk of white something out onto the front with the first wet coat of clear. Digging it out resulted in an unfortunate reunion with the primer - I tried drop-filling with a speck of gold but it didn't really blend properly so I re-dusted the whole front with a couple more coats of gold and carried on with the clear.
I'm sanding lightly where needed and scuffing the whole thing with an ultra-fine scouring pad between coats now. Couple more days to do before I'm comfortable leaving it to cure.

Well, the pickup covers just arrived from Shapeways, and I think they're going to work fine.
The surface is still a little rough but I'm pretty sure they can be smoothed and re-polished ok.
The pickups are Vintage Vibe Jag P90s, which are taller than straight Jag pickups because of the bar magnets.

Cool! Are those covers cast or machined?...
Either way you should be able sand through various stages up to about 1500 then polish them.

They're 3d printed.

Still i think sand and polish would be the go! Should get a nice shiny finish.

Wow, those look great- is there enough room for claws in there?

Re: Yamaha SG-3 & SG-2 replica project builds - frets & spra
Not in these ones - because of the bar magnets you can't use the claws properly with these pickups, and they're already shielded all around the coil. I have another version of these drawn up where the claw fits inside for stock Jag pickups, though, which I may well end up using on the SG-3. These covers are 2-3mm wider than the claws.noisepunk wrote:Wow, those look great- is there enough room for claws in there?
