Wiring tips/info/ideas needed for MIJ Jaguar type with switches galore

Post by Gearhunter » Mon Oct 20, 2008 4:15 am

Hello,new guy here.
Just scored a pretty cool Jaguar lawsuit'ish guitar off of Craigslist. Not sure who made it,the Silver Decal on the headstock has any info it had, all rubbed away.
Internally,it has been rewired,so the only switches/controls working are the on/off switches above the pickups, the knob next to the input jack is now a Master Volume(used to be the tone knob),and the lever arm  below the bridge pickup which is pretty much a volume boost when you pull it up,it springs back down when released. All the other switches/turn wheels have been disconnected.
It plays great, and the pickups sound pretty good, even without the tone knob.I would like to try and figure out the original wiring, and return it to its original state,or at least get the two volume wheels active and the tone knob back to a tone knob.
If you have any info on this guitar,I'd appreciate it.If you happen to have one and have a wiring gut shot, that would more than rock.
Sorry for the rambling post.

Here are some shots of it.

Where's Ben at?!  I'll be damned if that's not a Klira Star Club.  Awesome guitar.

Yep: http://wietsesguitars.nl/pagina81.html

So, that would make it German, not Japanese. The guy on the site in the link has his e-mail listed there; maybe you could ask hi9m to take a gut shot?

It's your birthday!

I have one exactly the same in white, but with different pickups. It's a '66 Klira Star Club - German.

But to keep things in one place, here's some info:

I love mine to bits. When I got it the neck was really twisted making it unplayable, so I ended up having to remove the fretboard, sand it flat and put a new boad on, but the electronics and the rest of the hardware were untouched. I'm happy to offer you whatever help you need getting yours back to full health again. Funnily enough I found this site when I was looking for info on mine - my first post was a response to someone asking if anyone had seen one of these. As far as I know no-one else on here has one. I don't know how much wiring experience you have but I'd be happy to re-wire it for you if you need.

Dude, that kicks so much ass.All the info I was needing in one post.
I do have some soldering skills,so that diagram and other pics should point me in the right direction.
I'll fire you a pm if I hit any snags.
Time to get some wire, and fire up the soldering gun.

Cool - good luck - hope all your pots and switches are ok.

It might be an idea to shield the cavity with copper tape while you've got it apart. Although the metal guard makes it reasonably quiet there's a lot of wire going back and forth in there - I still haven't got round to doing mine yet but next time it's open I definitely will. Is yours a hand-routed swimming pool like mine?

I'm hoping all the switches are working too.I may wait a week or two before I dive in,since I just put fresh strings on it and am digging too much as it is.
Yes,mine is swimming pool routed.
Even that top screw on the input jack metal plate looks to hit the same way,not really grabbing too much wood. >:(

Heh. When I first took mine apart I threw some epoxy filler on there just to hold the screw in and it's ok for now.
