Modded my Jazzmaster (humbucker content)

Post by garyptaszek » Mon Mar 23, 2009 5:28 am

Been really disapointed with my Jazzmasters live sound. The stock pickups in CIJ's are pretty piss poor...

I want to get some new JM pups. Seymour D' Quarter-Pounders or some Curtis Novak JM-90s.

for now though I've stuck my trust ol' Bareknuckle Nailbomb in it. Mounted and screwed straight to the body.

looks cool. i know what you mean with the cij pickups. they work for my recordings but in a live enviroment they're pretty weak.

It fits the bill imo. It looks great and probably lives up to your expectations. + it looks out of the ordenairy which is a big + in my book as well.
The Pu ring looks great.
I might give that setup a try myself one day.

And for the neck, you can easely fit any singlecoil fender spaced pu under the existing JM cover. I used to play a CIJ JM for quiet a while with some aftermarket Strat pu's (bridge and middle pu's to replace the stock ones. Sound improved a lot and they just fitted under the stock pu covers.)

Looks really sweet, specially with that ring.

yeah Im feeling it.
The nailbomb is such a great pickup. I've used it in about 5 different guitars and it has a way of mixing the guitars natural tone with itself.
It still sounds bright in the JM but with some serious punch in the lower ranges.

The brightness is due to the 1Meg pots in the JM. You can lower those to 500K pots and put a 0.22Pfu cap in it. THen you'll get a less brigth output. It couls also work to tame the stock neck pu.

^ Question about the 1meg pots, kinda off-topic, i know, but.. Does the 500K pot sound the same as 1Meg pot rolled halfway down? :D

did you need to do any modifications to the pickguard? i think i am going to make that to my cij jazzmaster too because i never use the standart pickup anyway..
did you screw the mount ring into the wood? where did you get the screws for that?

looks good, you should age the neck pick up cover to match the worn down look of the humbucker

Incorrect... I have previously replaced the pots and caps because the stock ones are fucking balls... it was still too bright and weedy with these changes.
A savage mod was inorder...

I used some short screws, kinda like pickguard screws but thinner, to mount the pickup to the body. Then I used 2 screws, similar to the Jazzmaster pup cover screws, to mount the pup ring to the body.
Just make sure you pickup right over hangs the pickup route on the pickguard

would it be theoretically possible to mount the pickup to the ring and then mount the ring to the body?
