Fender Mustang pickup switching question

Post by redchapterjubilee » Sun Oct 09, 2011 7:26 am

So I've got a 69 RI MIJ Mustang. I have issues with this guitar as a live performer, mainly because the pickup switching is really counterintuitive for me and definitely unlike the simple 3/5 way switching in all my other Fender guitars. No way I'm routing the body to put a standard 3 way in it, but I struck upon this idea though: could you wire one of the existing 3-ways to be a standard neck/both/bridge pickup switch and then maybe make the other one a kill/phase/out of phase switch? or even a kill/series/parallel? Google searched and didn't really find anything so I thought I'd ask here.

I used the upper switch mod from this on my Jagstang. Turns the switch into a pickup selector.

I just found that one on the Shortscale forum! Thank you. But does the 2nd switch have to be volume and tone? Seems it would be much more useful to have a phase or parallel/series setup instead. Anyone have or seen a wiring schematic for that?

If you leave it alone it can be for phase reversal. I made mine a humbucker splitter since it is on my Jagstang. I only used the wiring from the upper switch. The lower option didn't appeal to me.

This is how mine is wired. (Although it has a regular tone pot now vs TBX.) Oh I also put in 500k pots.

Oh ok. So leaving the second one alone still allows that pickup to be on, in phase or out of phase. I think that's how we'll do it then. Thank you! I'm excited all over again about this guitar.
