Mustang Bridge Question
helo.
so , i took all the tips on changing the bridge on my Japan jazzmaster to a mustang bridge.
i did so because of the whole string-spacing thing , but also because on the pictures i saw , it looked
like one of the worst things about jazzmasters were not a problem. the e strings are so much lower than
the other.
but then i got my new bridge, and it is just the same! argh!
i need my estrings , at least the low e , to be as high as the others. is there
a way to do this on a mustang bridge? i really need it , cause im playing my
guitar with a bow , and its hard to reach the low i right when its so low .. just hit a instead.. not good
thanks

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
the bridge is like that because it follows the neck radius....
if you want it all to be the same height, you could either try a tunomatic, or get spare mustang bridge barrels that are all the same height, and instal them.
I'd personally strick with the Mustang bridge and adjust my bow technique...afterall, even violins have radiused necks...can't be that hard to play with a bow.

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
I just put this on one of my project jags...Tusq saddles. They are fully adjustable, though from the pic it appears that they too have gaps between them on a Japanese bridge base. They can be bought at a.o. guitarpartsresource.com (that's where mine came from).

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
well.
of course , a violin has a curve on it , but on a violin you can adjust the angle of wich the bow enters to the strings.
a guitar being flat , and bigger than a violin , in addition to the fact that you are standing with the guitar flat against you..
that does not give you the same chanses of adjusting the technique...
where can i get these barrels?

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
Jazzmaster with a deep deep deep body contour and waist cut would help . Could be a neat idea for a project.

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
You should get the same gaps with a vintage bridge as well if you use their saddles.Orang Goreng wrote: I just put this on one of my project jags...Tusq saddles. I looked on their site and checked out their specs, then measured my vintage Mustang bridge:
saddle width
Graph Tech : 7.92 mm
vintage Mustang: a little less than 11 mm (10.9?)
low E to high E string distance:
Graph Tech: 52.07 mm
vintage Mustang: a little more than 55 mm (55.2?)
all that said, a vintage Mustang bridge is not perfect either. I have it on a Mustang and I need to have the low E raised more to account for the bigger string, so I just have the screw on the bottom higher on the bass side, plus there isn't enough travel for perfect intonation on all the strings.

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
Note to self: Buy a cheap drill press and one old washing machine motor (+ files + hacksaw = poor man's lathe) and make some decent saddles.
Bigger in sum than parts.

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
I'm assuming you tried just adjusting the height of the saddles individually?

Who me? On the Mustang bridge? Metaphysically? With levitation rituals?

Doesn't warmoth have a modified mustang bridge with saddle adjustment:

Re: Mustang Bridge Question
Yeah, they do, but there was some talk as if it works fine. Some people love it, some people say it rattles, same with the Japanese bridges, for some people the saddles move and have gaps, for some people the pressure of the strings works fine and the saddles are together.
Personally, I don't hit the strings very hard, so even a Jaguar/Jazzmaster bridge might be fine for me. I actually have one, I think I'm going to try it on my Mustang (I don't have a Jag/Jazzmaster), although I do realize it's not the same as on a Jaguar or Jazzmaster because of the string angle.
