They do the job pretty well, especially if you want to eliminate bleed from the drums, etc. I used to use one a lot and it sounded pretty good - I had a H&K combo and I thought my sound through the monitors with the built-in Red Box was better than standing in front of the amp. It was a while ago and I never A/B-ed the tone with a good mic, so YMMV.
