Anyone know anything about this Guyatone amp?

Post by mikkiki » Fri May 02, 2008 9:56 am

As i got some money for my birthday, i am thinking what i should do with the money. It is not much, so it's very difficult to decide.

One of the things i am thinking about getting, would be a proper tube amp. Right now i only have a Fender Frontman 15R transistor amp and i am beginning to miss a good amp which i could use i a band eventually. I am playing in a Music School band in which they're is a nice Fender Hot Rod, but if i were to make a band some time (which i really want to) i would need a good amp myself.

So, to the point (i am really good about babble about pointless things, huh?): i were looking at advertisements at a danish forum for musicians, and found a seller selling a Guyatone GA 2000 tube combo. I found a Harmony Central review in a search on Google, but that was all. The seller says that it has a 1x12" speaker, has 2 6L6 output tubes and is from the late 70's.

I practically know nothing about amps, so maybe some of you guys could help me? I have to drive quite a long way if i want to try it, so information on purpose would easen my choise about wether or not i should take the drive. The seller is gonna send my a few pics soon, if that will help.

Well, Gyatone like ELK kind of specialized in copying fender amps, mostly cosmetics, their guts are something completely different.
A lot of these Gyatones have looks very simelar to ealy 70ties Fender amps. They did some copy of the "twin reverb", "Bassman" and I think a "Super reverb"
The problem with these amps is their overall construction, bad components, not to good wiring etc. Where most Fenders (even SF) look kind of nice on the inside, the Gyatone and Elk amps look like kooked spaghetti. Wires all over the place, etc, etc.

I've seen and heard a few and they are not bad, but certainly not good.
IMHO there are better "cheaper tube" amps out there. I got a friend tech who's not afraid of any amp, waterdamaged, shorted out, etc...But he swore he would never ever touch one of those again. He kind of advised me not to ever call him if I got one of those. I once almost bought a Guyatone 100W head (mid 70ties) (Twin/Showman config) for € 200 (thought it was a steal) Did not proceed because of tech friends advise. Bought a very clean '64 Bassman head for €320 a couple of months later and a "64 Tremolux head for €300 (needed only retolexing) so if you look arround deals can still be found.

just my two Eurocents.

PS. THis Japanes site has some "Gut pics of the Guyatone, looks better then what I saw. But you can see what I mean....
