Tolex/grill cloth indecision

Post by luau » Mon Apr 28, 2008 6:21 pm

I've been lusting after a 1974x clone for a while but am having trouble making up my mind about how to dress it up. I'm going with a 1x12" combo and a 1x12" ext. cab (I want open and closed backs). Thoughts?

GUITARmole, that's the check size I'm after. I don't really know much about Marshalls.  :-[  Mojo has what looks to be the same cloth you've posted but listed as 'large check'. Either way, close enough. I love your amp.  :-*

Here's orange and salt and pepper, or as close as I can find anyway.

Those little Marshall combos are so neat almost any colours look good on them IMO. I'd vote for the orange, just because I love the salt-and-pepper look.

(If I ever get one myself I'd probably go for blonde with lloydloom.)

Well, I had to build a 100W head so I could have another Marshall in orange!  Clearly the only solution for you is to not decide but to have TWO amps...one in each color! :D

I like the way you think GUITARmole!

Thanks for your votes and opinions everyone.

Orange and salt'n'pepper it is. The amp kit (sIII from Trinity) got ordered yesterday and the cabinets (Mojo.. they're close) today. I'm going to pillage the V30s from my Twin and use those for now to keep the cost down a bit so all I need is tubes. So begins the wait.

Cool!!  I went white w/ gold piping and S&P cloth but the orange is killer.  Are you building the amp yourself?

:? That's a beauty. The black piping is a winner.

Yes, I'm going to build it myself.

I had a problem to overcome already as I want a 1x12 combo and a 1x12 extension cab. As you know, the combo chassis has only a single speaker jack. Stephen mentioned that I could leave the impedance switch out and squeeze a jack in there but I kind of need that functionality. I had the idea, not a very original one I suppose, to mount a pair of jacks on a bit of aluminum angle stock inside the cab somewhere and then run them to the jack on the chassis. I ran this by him, he approved, and tossed in a pair of Cliff jacks free of charge. He was really cool about explaining the superiority of his cabs in comparison to the Mojos that I ordered too.

I'm really excited to get it and it's always a great feeling to spend money with someone that treats you right.

Yeah, I was really happy with how the whole deal went when I bought my amp from him.  That's interesting regarding the impedance switch as mine has two jacks actually.  He must have changed that at some point in the last couple of years.  If you have any questions about putting it together feel free to ask.  I don't know a ton about the inner workings but I can tell you a bit about my experience.  I'll also offer up one tip right now...  be very deliberate with the input jacks and use shrink tubing on any exposed wire from the shielded cable that runs to the tube sockets.  I had some issues with the inputs on my first go 'round and I had to re-do them.

Thanks, I appreciate it! The tip is duly noted. I may have a question or two about the PPIMV mod you posted about recently too after I get it assembled and working properly. I saw the schematic on the Trinity board and I'm not sure how it fits in, but then I don't have the schematic for the amp so it'll probably make sense when I do.
