Finally Got One of These...

Post by Surfysonic » Tue Nov 19, 2024 9:59 am

AmpRx BrownBox Voltage Attenuator - totally worth getting and I regret not getting one sooner. I use it for my '62 Fender Pro (110v) and my '63 Fender Bandmaster (117v). I can get the attenuation down to 111v for my Pro. Oh, my - the amp is now tonally more airy and clear. From what I've read, it should also be less harsh on the tubes since the voltage is closer to it's original spec.

I also swapped out the unknown ceramic speaker the Pro came with and put in a new Jensen P15N alnico speaker (same model as original stock (unless it came with an Oxford 15M6). Really improved tonally all-around. I was never happy with the unknown ceramic speaker. I'll have to dig it out of it's box and post a photo of it to see if anyone recognizes it.

I haven't actually tried it with my '63 Bandmaster yet but will see if I can get it down to 117v or as close as possible. 8)

If you have a vintage amp and don't have one of these BrownBox Voltage Attenuator, I can't recommend it enough. :)

I keep saving these when the pop up of Reverb but I never pull the trigger. I need to just bite the bullet.

I favorited one on Reverb and another Reverb seller offered me a $25 discount, so I went for it. 8)

That would be cool! Fortunately, the BrownBox has 2 power cord inputs, so they can share the box. My '64 Fender Reverb Unit also is 117v, so I wish it had another input - which may get me to buy another BrownBox at some point, especially if it takes some time to move my '62 Fender Bandmaster head (that I may end up putting back in my 2x10 combo cab).

Since normal modern voltage (in my home, at least) is 120v, I'm wondering if it will be a significant difference using it (down to 117v)?

how is this different from using a variac? what does the bottom control knob do?

i've been using a 10 ampere variac for decades now to dial in the line voltage for some vintage and especially Japanese (100 volt) amps. i think the variac cost me $65.

it also doesn't offer more voltage than the wall does, only limits it. if you goof with a variac, things blow up.

the bottom knob is to match the wall voltage first, prior to volt drop options.

I think the idea is great, the price not so much. I make a set voltage drop version for myself.

My wall voltage is 123-125 so it makes a huge difference to get to 112-115 for the higher tube voltages.
With lower voltage (lower heat) everything lasts longer including guitar amps.
