Silverface ministack bachelor pad

Post by 46346 » Thu Apr 17, 2025 11:14 pm

i recently revived this setup that i used to use in my old bachelor bungalow. it's a great sounding versatile pair for an open living room, but not quite elegant enough to leave out all week in our current home with m'lady, she has raised the bar aesthetically, but she's down with the '64 Princeton Reverb in one corner, and a '61 Ampeg Reverberocket in another. i'm not complaining!

but i can't bring myself to shuffle these two along, they are still too cool, even though i have to remember to fire them up and keep them breathing down at my studio.
played together, you can tweak varying combinations of grind, chime, and bass with a variety of mids.

Recommended!

How can a pair of size matching Silverface amps be not pleasing enough?
Is it because of the lack of Reverb? Or the weirdly angled logo and mismatched knobs on the Musicmaster? :D
(Never knew they used anything other than the black skirted knobs on Silverface style amps) are these from a Rhodes?

I think they look great!
Also this is an almost romantic pic - with the blossom leaves and the cat. And I bet it sounds great too!

I know right? :fp:
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

I used to have one that my dad pulled out of a neighbor's trash. No shit. I replaced one output tube socket, a fresh pair of output tubes, a speaker, and away I went. I loved that amp. Strangely enough I also had a Vibro Champ at the time. and a regular Champ. I sold them all to buy my first Orange. Wish I still had the MM Bass and Vibro Champ.

What a nice pair!
For me the SF amps in general look the nicest esthetically, especially with drip edge. Maybe it's due to me being a small child when they were around first time. I also like the car designs of that era the most.

yeah - this is the earliest version and those knobs are original. i think you're right about them being the same as a Rhodes Mark 1 ! i haven't seen them on any other amp model, and eventually they made this amp more 'standard' using typical knobs and 6V6 output tubes.

i don't know if the logo/grill cloth is correct, a little sloppy from the factory, or perhaps redone by a user...

oh gosh, that's a fun idea to swap chassis! i have indeed plugged the VC into various cabs with glorious results. i even had an eye out for a while, looking for a MMB cab on the cheap, but no dice.

some day when there are less projects lingering, i might try a swap. mostly for the amusment of seeing
a tiny MMB... i actually have a Weber 8" that could handle it!

I did use them together! They complement each other really well. The super loose bass of the Champs get filled in with the MM bass, the great chewiness of the Champs get an extra dimension with the stiffer MM bass layered in. It was almost 3 dimensional from what I remember. Now I’m getting nostalgic… must resist re-buying them!
