What is a good affordable distortion amp for stoner music

Post by Alex! » Tue Apr 22, 2025 4:36 am

Me and some buddies are starting a stoner rock band (even tho we are not stoners lol) but my current amps gain stage is buns (buns is gen z slang for bad). Any recommendations?
Edit: it is also gonna be fuzz heavy so something that can handle a Op Amp Big Muff
I ❤️ fuzz pedals!

Anything? Dont let the gear tastes of previous acts within a genre define what you do.

Traynor, Sunn, Peavey and Ampeg are solid choices that can still be found fairly reasonably. I feel like getting lots of watts and speaker surface area with a good fuzz and distortion pedal is more important than brand when it comes to stoner/doom music. Older solid state Peaveys and Sunns work well too!

Laney AORs can be found for cheap, especially the combos. If they're good enough for Sleep...

I actually own both a Traynor and a Laney AOR :D

Traynors I feel like are a bit overpriced atm but I live in socal. They can be had for cheap depending on where you are. I would just suggest getting one that's already been serviced or cheap enough to get it serviced.

The Laney AOR I got really cheap. It sounds pretty good to me with the 6v6 tubes. Some controls are bland but the metal mesh on the speaker and tubes are great for anyone that trys to kick it.

Vintage Ampeg V/VT series depending on your needs. Still under the radar, affordable, amaze tone.

If you're not afraid of solid state, the Orange Super Crush 100 or the Crush Pro 120 could be good contenders. They have gain channels that are well suited for stoner/sludge/doom, and the clean channels have lots of headroom and are pretty neutral, so you can throw pretty much any pedal at them.

Any kind of Ampeg VT head.....

Those solid state Orange amps....get it clean as possible , then add pedals.

Also don't discount pedals. I have a DAM Meathead clone that's like instant wall of doom through any amp.

Orange OR15s seem reasonable used and will fit this. Or the Super Crush as suggested upthread.

I just ordered an Orange Dual Baby 100:

The orange channel is the same as the dirty channel of the Super Crush, but with an added presence control, and a "tubby" switch. I'll report back with its stoner capabilities as soon as it gets here.

Yes, it's basically their Pedal Baby 100 but with an added preamp.

I've been eyeing the Pedal Baby for a while to use with a setup that would benefit from going into the effects return of an amp (my main amp doesn't have an effects loop). But when I saw this one I figured, why not get two additional OD channels for not much more money?
