Recommend classic 12" speakers

Post by NICQ » Tue May 13, 2025 10:17 pm

Lately I got into trying out different speakers for my amps and I wanted to ask which would be some recommended speakers or "classics" everyone should have tried?

I have a Vox AC4tv (4W/16 ohm) that I'm re-housing into a head cab and I want to use it with a 1x 12" cab - also want to run my AC10 through that cab
I mostly play at home on moderate volume and sometimes in a rehearsal space where I can crank them a bit more

So far I have a Jensen P10R and a C12R for "american"/fender sound and a Celestion Vintage 30 G12 that's on the "british"/marshall side of things
I know the classic speaker for Vox amps would be the Alnico Blue - not really convinced yet to get one as it is fairly expensive for just trying
A Greenback G12M is on my list

but I wondered what else would be some recommended "classic" speakers - not just for Vox but overall?

I used to really like the Celestion Elite 80 in my (long gone) Egnater cab. They’re pretty much rebadged Classic Lead 80’s. Worth checking out.

I like EV EVM12s but a Peavey Scorpion will get ya in the ballpark for less money. My current 12" speakers (other than a Scorpion) are the WGS ET90 and WGS Blackhawk Alnico which I both like quite a bit! I've had a few Eminences now but they never thrilled me though.

The only true 12“ experience I have is Vintage 30s in Supersonic cabs - 17 years of owning and playing the 2x12, a few months with the older/small 4x12 and also about 12 years with the newer slanted 4x12.

Most recently I added two old Austrovox cabs to the fold - and they contain vintage Greenbacks (Pulsonic) from 73 and 75. And yes, they sound amazing!

Celestion "Greenback" G12M
Celestion "Greenback" G12H
Celestion Blue
Celestion Gold
Celestion Creamback

Jupiter 12SC or SA
Jupiter 12LC or LA

I personally really like the Weber Signature 12 alnico with the smooth cone. It's affordable, low efficiency, sounds old AF, overdrives easy, rolls off the bass just right and hits just right.

I will also say that I bit the bullet and bought a pair of Golds for my Fender Bassman and I have not regretted it for a second nor have I worried about the money I spent either!
