Not to push the metaphor too far, but then some of the fancy boutique amps can be thought of like organic produce: still an apple, but more flavor than the others.

I don't know man, the only way to go is really bass and treble on ten with the mids on zero.

I second what ThetaMan said.
Putting all the dials at 5 is really a great test of the amp's compatibility with you.  If you absolutely hate the sound, you'll never ever ever be happy with the tone you get.

I tried out the 6 6 3 2 on my fender 75, and it works perfectly with a JM!

Found this site, lots of detail about the tone controls on both fender and marshall - as well as other good oil.

Enjoy!

Here's something I picked up somewhere a whileback.

Set the tone controls to minimum. Play an open bottom E and increase the bass with your fretting hand. When the bass stops increasing, ie you keep turning and there's no increase of bass, stop. That's the point you want. Now do the treble with the top E and the presence to taste. If the amp has a middle control then use the D string.

Most amps come out at 4-6 except the Fender HRD which for some reason I cannot get it to work and I cannot get a good sound out of one. I used one after another guitarist got it set up sounding good and the bass was on min... :wtf:

Nomatter what amp I play I set (on 1-10) T5 B4 M7 then volume just under the point of beakup. I use an LPB~>Fender Blender~>BigMuff for different flavors of distortion, the LPB I leave on to drive the line.

That page is an interesting read, lots of good info thanks.

I need to look into an attenuator, my Little Giant is so loud by the time it starts breaking up that I usually end up playing through my Pignose hehe. I need to get an attenuator so that I can mess around with the settings and not destroy my ears. My cats will be a lot happier too hehe.
