New Amp Day!

Post by chrisjedijane » Mon Jul 28, 2008 12:53 pm

Working in a guitar shop is bad for me. A guy came into the shop with a little amp kit head on friday to trade in for some other stuff. It looked pretty interesting, so I decided to try it out and was completely blown away by the sound of this thing...

(apologies for the METALLLZ AXEZZZZ on the wall behind.)

Sorry for the bad pic, my old phone is broken so all I have is the crap camera on my new phone. It's 20W, Class A through 2 12AX7s and two EF86's, and sounds great with both my Jazzmaster and SG - something that my Blues Deluxe doesn't really do. I love the sound of this thing, just need to get a nice 2x12 for it and I'm all set! Best thing is, I got a great deal on it :). Volume-wise, it's perfect - capable of being really loud with just the right amount of distortion and breaks up early but it's still clean at low volumes. It's also extremely responsive to my playing - I could probably ditch distortion pedals with this thing! I tried it out in the shop with the Elvis Costello Jazzmaster, too :D

That's pretty cool!  You said it has 2 12AX7 and 2 EF86... those are both preamp tube types (12AX7 is a dual triode and EF86 is a preamp tube pentode)

Did you mean EL84s, perhaps?

Is it a Marshall 18-watt circuit by chance?

Cool beans, Chris!!

I use the EC Jazzmaster at my local shop (for locals only) to try out the amps, too!

Sorry, it's been a long day! It's two ECC83s and two EL84s as far as I'm aware. Actually, I can't remember off the top of my head, I've had a complete brain fart. Anyway I can't wait to get it home! Without looking under the hood it seems like a Marshall 18-watt circuit without the extra channel. It's certainly in that ballpark tonally.

The one in our shop is lovely, although in need of heavier strings and a good setup. I happened to be working when the Fender rep was in, and convinced the manager to order it in :D. EC Jazzmaster + Vibro-King w/ Trem+Reverb = Teh AWESOMZ!
