Blackface Bandmaster?

Post by dug » Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:00 am

This is for sale locally. They are asking $1200 obo.

Its the bandmaster and the supposedly original cabinet.

What do you guys think it is worth? Aren't these 40 watts?

The only way I could get it, would be to sell my bassman 70 and my 2x12 avatar cab.
I really love the way its sounds, but I love the old blackface fenders more.

that is fairly high.

But they seem to be $1000 amps nowadays...  I have one (my first head, which I recently tracked down a matching cab for) and it sounds fabulous.  But it isn't small.  (if this is the huge cabinet, I'd be even less tempted.  Might sound good, but that's like having a bass stack).   I put mine up locally a while back for $1200 on a whim, but no one followed through.

Will also depend on speakers in there and all the extras Brad mentioned.  (bring an electric screwdriver for the cab -- there are a million woodscrews back there).  I've also noticed that fender logos are going for $50+ each, so that's a deciding factor, too.

fender price tracker  take it with a grain of salt, but gives you an idea of the recent prices.

Try it out, see if you can get it for under $1000 if you like it.  (Jump the channels to get it to break up earlier  -- in to ch1.1, patch cord from 1.2 to 2.1, dial in both volumes as needed).

edit: link fixed.  oops.

it's also a bit of a bellwether for the economy tanking right now.  I think people are willing to sell their vintage amps to fill up the SUV.  (or have to do so).  Prices will continue to drop till November, I gather (and the end of summer is usually cheap time for guitar stuff, for whatever reason).

It is worth knowing what the completed auctions are going for -- craigslist or want ad should always be cheaper than ebay (esp. if you factor in shipping).  But it is worth something to be able to pick it up and hear it).
You might also consider letting the seller know what the ebay rates are, in a nice and polite way, of course.

I knew 1200 was too much. That's why I ask you guys  ;).

I've seen just the heads sell for $350 to $400.

"But it wouldn't be as loud or clean and wouldn't have as tight a low-end."

It probably wouldn't work for me, I really really love the bassman 70.
Its not as awesome as the Blackface I had to sell a couple of years ago.
But it stays cleaner as you crank it up, which I really like.

*I linked the pix from them, they must have deleted them.

If this is what you want, you want a Showman or Dual Showman, not a bandmaster!

If it works fine, I don't think you'll be sorry for getting the amp, the cab is another matter, those things are way too big and heavy for what they have inside.

:-* my bandmaster piggyback.  (it does have an upgraded output transformer, so it is probably 60-70 watts).  Great amp, just not one of the holy grails of vintage amps.

Guild, btw, is a great company -- my starfire III is my favorite guitar (offset or no) and can still be had for bargain prices.  (over 10 years ago now, but I got the SFIII and the bandmaster for less than $1100 total.  Hello budget 60s stuff that will never get really valuable!)

Also remember that the bandmaster cabs got exponentially bigger in 67 or so...  From a cute 212 horizontal cab with tilt back legs to a monstrous 212 vertical cab.  The small ones were also standard for the bassman.

I agree with the assessment, and the mod!  ;)

TOTALLY agree.  Guild guitars and Ampeg amps have always been probably the best values, across the board, in the "vintage American gear" market.  Prices for Ampeg are starting to climb though...
